Will This External HD work with my Pbook?

I found this Maxtor 200GB External Hd for only $100

Yet, under system requirments it does not list OS X.

Do External HD require an operating system to work? If so, is there any way to get this working on a mac

There is no reason that this will not work on your Mac. Software is probably included (like cloning stuff) that only works on PCs. That is what the requirements are probably for.

On another note, I really recommend you looking into a firewire drive instead. It will be much smother and faster.

Yeah go for firewire, you won't regret it. Otherwise, this should work, macs can read and write FAT32 disks.

I am going to be using this drive to backup all my files and store extra videos/pictures

Firewire sounds like a good idea, yet I have not found any for a price such as this.

If anybody has a link to a firewire drive under 150$ that can hold more than 120GB please provide a link

Don't forget that Maxtor drives are known to be low on the scale of reliability. After a quick google search, http://www.supergooddeal.com/product_p/hm160ddu2f-s.htm turned up as the first link.

Froogle turns up several 160GB firewire drives for under $120. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&c2coff=1&client=safari&rls=en&q=firewire%20drive%20160GB&btnG=Search&sa=N&tab=wf

Alternatively OtherWorldComputing has a firewire/usb enclosure special for $64.99. You could add a drive from Frys/Outpost and come out less than $120 after rebate.

Drives to not come pre-formatted. Yout must format them yourself. You can pick HFS, HFS+, FAT32, or Unix format (UFS i think). So your comment is a non-issue.

At TigerDirect.com they are selling a 250 GB Seagate HDD (7200 RPM) for $69 after rebate. Buy that and an enclosure (I bought an AMS Venus) and the price will be anywhere between $100-125.

I plan on getting a FW800 enclosure and putting in a 250 or 300gb hard drive. for my 15" Powerbook. It is the best way to go in my opinion. Best value, fastest, and will take awhile to run out of space.

My thinking is, I have FW800, mine as well take advantage of it.

USB2 is not slower that FW400, FW800 is faster but there are very few devices or computer that have it

There are rumors that FW support will be removed on the next iBook

I personally prefer FW but USB2 is good and seems to have a better future

I wouldn't bet on it. But yes, that is that rumor is going around. Actually, there is no evidence of it. It's more like speculation by certain writers.
