I am currently running a PC a built by myself back in the day. It is composed of the following:
AMD T-Bird 1.4GHZ
512 DDR RAM
Geforce 3
Asus AM2766(if I recall) MOBO
WD 1 TB Black Caviar

It was one of the fastest setups you could build back then.

I just purchased an iMac i7 2.93 and am wondering if this is going to be a night and day difference with the mac. I sure am going to miss not knowing exactly what is in my PC, but hopefully the change will be worth it.

...nope, return the iMac = it was a waste of $$, 512Mb RAM is plenty:p

You have a great machine. Enjoy it as it should last you a good many years. I don't think you need us to tell you that you made a fine upgrade.

Might as well as if going from a 1990 Toyota camry to a 2010 Audi A6 is worth it. Lol.
 
The difference should pretty well blow your mind. It sounds like your iMac has about 8x (or more) the processing power of your previous machine, 8x the RAM (huge difference, especially with today's memory-hogging OSes and internet nonsense. Not to mention the far superior graphics card and such. My macbook blows an old dell that I have away, and that even had a 3GHz P4 and a gig of RAM, although it still does have a slightly better graphics card, an ATi X700 pro, I believe. But that was a huge desktop, so that's not so much of an issue

Yeah, like an order of magnitude faster. At least.
 
I suppose if anyone compared a "stock" 1970s Chev 4 cylinder with standard 4 speed tranny to a new technology 2010 BMW 8 Cylinder with "turbo" and Auto 5 speed transmission, I'd say its not really a fair comparison. As a general statement, the new BMW will "blow the doors off" the older technology Chev.

However... Don't be surprised if "network" transfers are near the same time speed. When downloading .AVI files, my HP Win 7 laptop is approx same time speed as my wife's new mini-2010 iMac 21.5" i3 3.2 GHZ system. One can obtain a faster CPU, a faster graphics card, faster memory and even faster internal HDD access speed. But if using the same "network" on both systems for only downloading, their available B/W to/from the Internet cloud is still a bottleneck area. If using the same locally attached printer, its printing speed is approx the same as well. Although print job "rendering" is much faster on the iMac system. But if comparing "internal" processing power, the new iMac (re: the newer BMW) is a much newer technology machine. By default, it will be much better then the older Chev box.

You are comparing a machine built probably around 2001-2002 with a current day machine. Of course it will be a night and day difference!
