Will this LG monitor work with Mac Mini and which adapter thanks

Hi everyone,

I'm replacing my 2006 17" iMac with a 2.53 ghz/4GB Mac Mini (probably next week). I've read some of the monitors and Mac compatibility threads but am still a little confused about the display adapters.

For the LG Monitor in the link below, would I purchase the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

LG W2340VG

My second question is, is this a good monitor? Or should I consider the Dell 2990WA?

And if yes on the Dell, do I need that MDP to VGA adapter or can I use the Mini's native DVI?

I don't play games and have all but stopped web design. I use the machine for writing, schoolwork, web surfing, music downloads. I watch short segements online, not entire movies.

This has the best user score in NewEgg, would definitely consider that. It's cheaper as well. That LG and the one I linked have DVI so the Mini-DVI to DVI cable that comes with your Mini is enough.

Thank you for the help Hellhammer. I may go with the LG because of it's proximity to the homestead (not having to take a day off from work for delivery). Appreciate the fast reply.

Okay, sounds fair enough. You still need a DVI cable, I think. They are cheap, probably won't cost more than 5$ if you don't have one.
 
You dont need anything.

mini comes with a miniDVI to DVI adapter in the box, just use the DVI cable that comes with the monitor.

My question is: why a mini?

$799 + $239 = $1040 for a 2.53 C2D, 320 gig laptop drive, no keyboard, no mouse, no camera... + tax?

$1099 gets you a 21" iMac -- the extra $50 gets you 3.06 C2D, 500 gig 3.5 drive, keyboard, magic mouse, iSight... + maybe no tax?

The LG he is going to buy comes with VGA cable, not DVI.

Good point, iMac is way better than Mini.

Right - tell that to all those with screen issues on iMacs.

I can't stand the Apple KB & Mouse and don't want iSight. I already have a 24" monitor, but the OP needs to get one. The 3.5" drive is a good point though and a weak spot on the mini.

Your comparison on prices it unfair - you use the Apple store price for the mini and the MacConnection price for the iMac. Why not use the same for both?

21.5" have been quite okay compared to 27". And we compared the specs, not problems or anything because they depend on luck. Your opinion doesn't make Apple KB, mouse and iSight bad because it's your opinion and everyone has their own.

BTW, 21.5" is 999$ from Apple's refurb store.

Totally understand, but everyones needs are different. All of my macs have iSights, which I thought I would never care about -- but my wife and I sometimes video chat across the house, handy =)

I cant stand the Apple mouse either (love the full size keyboard tho, even after I said I would hate it) -- so sell them?

Fair enough. MC mini is $770, $30 less.

Still 500 mhz slower. =)

Wow, that's borderline the laziest thing I have ever heard someone doing, lol. ...and I'm really lazy.

Remember to use Bing cashback and buy the Mini or Monitor off of Ebay - Buy It Now (if you can deal with a delivery, OP cannot), never pay Apple prices if you don't have to.

okay so I need an additional dvi cable along with the one that comes with the mini?

Why a mini?

Sadly, I got a dud 21.5" iMac (yellow screen issues, constant speaker noise no matter what I was doing etc.etc.) and thanks to the really lousy runaround treatment I received from customer service on the phone (both a supervisor and an underling), I do not want another iMac. They were trying to hold back $28 on my refund, which I fought for tooth and nail - I actually had proof from them (and am hoping I see back later this week).

As a result of my recent experience, I do not have the patience of some of my fellow Mac-heads in receiving and returning dud after dud iMac.

Doing more research, I've discovered folks pretty much have nothing bad to say about them.

I no longer engage in constant web design as my only creative output is writing (screenplays, etc.). If I do any more web design, I'll be using Pixelmator and a Dreamweaver substitute.

My 2006 iMac, the hard drive is dying and I need something for my ongoing online classes. I kind of like the 15" MBPs but like so many of you won't purchase old tech and frankly, I'm wary of Apple doing upgrades.

Bummer to hear about your first iMac and the situation surrounding its return, but thats certainly not normal Apple customer service (unless you go into a store), and not the issues for the 21" model.

How about just replacing the drive on your iMac? if thats truly thats all thats wrong with it, then just replacing the drive should be a no brainer.

$100 (or less) for a nice and fast 1TB drive and maybe $50 for install.

Theres no reason to toss out the entire iMac just for a bad drive. Thats like throwing a way a 3 year old car cause the tires need replacing.

I wish I knew what made so many people leary of "Rev A" Macs. Sure, the 27" iMac has been a pretty huge fail, but the previous Rev A AL iMac was fine. As was the Rev A G5 towers. As was the Rev A G4 AL Powerbooks, as was the Rev A Beige G3s...

$150 for a new drive in your iMac sounds like the best plan.

Appreciate the excellent suggestion Badger, there's more going on with the 2006 iMac than the hard drive now too (monitor is showing dead pixels, along optical drive issues not ejecting discs, making nearly as bad noises as the hard drive).

I'm out of the extended warranty. :( But the replacement hard drive was something I considered since so many have done so successfully.

I have no complaints about my replacement teal tuber (1999), 2002 and 2006 iMacs, and despite all the struggles getting replacements/refunds, this hasn't turned me away from Apple. I'm just a little leery of the current iMacs.

It's not the $ (I have almost enough to get a Mac Pro and a ACD, if I wanted to), the issue is I need to get a replacement machine the day of or day after this 2006 iMac says officially says bye.

Mini comes with a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, not cable so you need a cable as well. All electronic stores sell them and you can try to get it as an extra when you buy that display and it's ~5$ anyway.

I got your point and it sounds fair. Mini is a great machine and will be enough for you.
