Can I put a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE from a G5 in my G4? If not, what is a good graphics card upgrade - I want to run dual monitors at 1280x1024...

Thanks,
Dan

I believe the 6600LE is PCI Express. All G4s are AGP. The card will not even physically fit in.

Additionally, the 6600LE only works with the very latest G5s.

For a good G4 video card (AGP), check out the ATI Radeon 9600 PC/Mac Edition.

No.. they do have AGP versions of the 6600. Involves a PCIe to AGP bridging chip.

The beefiest card I'm aware of that is guaranteed to work in the G4s is the 2x/4x AGP version of the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256MB. It'll run you around $250, though.

The 9600 doesn't pack quite the punch, but costs under $100, so it's a much better budget-oriented choice.

The thing to watch out for is the AGP speed; the G5s are AGP 8x, but depending on the G4 model they're either 4x or 2x, so you need to make sure to get a card that supports the correct speed for your particular G4. The 256MB X800 Mac Edition is plenty beefy, for example, but it's AGP 8x only, so it doesn't support any of the G4s--G5 only.

You can get into tricker stuff like flashing the firmware of Windows cards to run in a Mac, but I personally wouldn't mess with that.

Thanks....how can I check if its 2x or 4x?

Will the 9600 run dual monitors at 1280x1024 fine (smooth)?

Go to either Everymac.com or LowEndMac.com -- they each have a spec database of every computer Apple has ever made, and you should be able to find your particular model of G4 there to confirm what kind of graphics slot it has.

Either that, or just buy one of the 2x/4x cards that work in basically every G4.

As for what resolutions the 9600 supports, I'm not sure, but if you look at the product page it should tell you and I'm fairly certain it'll do what you want. Have a look over at OWC (macsales.com) -- they sell a variety of these cards and know their stuff.
