Hi, I'm new to this forum. I know this question has been asked before. I am studying in Uk and I bought a Iphone 3GS there at a very high price(no long term contract) couple of months ago. Because of personal reason, I am moving back to US next week, I really like the Iphone and I want to continue to use the Iphone in US with the one that I have if that's possible, if its not then what? I don't want to jailbreak the phone because I want to update my Iphone with Apple's firmware.

I'm assuming you brought it from O2 as a PAYG handset, in which case you can just get it unlocked an use it with any carrier

Yes, you can use it. However, unless you can get it unlocked by your carrier, you'll be stuck with your UK Carrier unless you unlock. However, if you got it as a PAYG phone, then you can simply get a SIM from at&t or T-Mobile and use their service. The phone should not become tied to a carrier if it was legitimately unlocked by your provider. However, be careful when talking to at&t about the iPhone, as they will often insist that it will not work unless on a contract with them, with an unlimited data plan.

Get your iPhone officially unlocked here before you go back to the US.

You'll be able to use it with AT&T and T-Mobile when you get back home.

The PAYG is locked to O2 and will cost £15 to unlock using the link above.

Tell O2 on the form that the phone is on contract. They will unlock right away ant not charge. Apparently they don't check judging by the number of people doing it this way.
