Will update slow my 3 year old mac down?

I have a 3 year old Mac Book Pro. I currently have snow leopard. If I update to mountain lion, will my computer be slowed down? Does anyone know or have any experience?

My boyfriend uses my old Santa Rosa MacBook Pro (3,1) that harks back from 2007 with Mountain Lion and it's absolutely fine.

However, the machine has been upgraded somewhat:

• 4GB of RAM from 2GB.
• HD has been changed to a faster, larger capacity model.
• Top-case has been changed for the 4,1's to get multi-touch.
• The Bluetooth adapter from 4,1 has been installed to get Bluetooth 2.1 support.
• Wireless adapter has been changed from the existing Atheros AR5008 to an AR9380 to get 450Mbps 3x3:3 support.

I have an early 2009 Mac Mini that had the original 1 GB of RAM and was running the Snow Leopard upgrade. It was getting painfully slow.

A few weeks ago ago I installed an additional 4GB of RAM and loaded Mountain Lion at the same time. I don't know if it was the extra RAM or OS X 10.8, but now it flies.

It's going to depend more on the specs than the age. You want to have plenty of RAM (2GB is not going to be great with ML), and if you have one of the decent processors from that time, and enough drive space. Chances are it'll run fine with just a RAM upgrade if necessary.
