will we ever see the option for 3rd party maps to be default go to

I would also have to loved to see third party apps to become e.g. the default maps, music, video, e-mail app after last years option to remove a few Apple apps such as Mail but nope still not in iOS11 
I seriously doubt waze or google maps will ever be options since google is a direct competitor. Maybe some of the lesser used independent maps?
Does it really matter so much? In some apps I even get the option to open either Apple Maps or Google Maps and otherwise you can just use what you want. I have both on my iPhone along with (former Nokia) HERE Maps which has excellent offline navigation. Google Maps has street view and superior information on point of interest. Apple Maps looks better, feels somehow faster, does everything like it's supposed to nowadays and even provides with information on public transport now in my country.
I wouldn't say any of these third party apps should be "the default" because each has their own strong points. You can't seriously think Apple would integrate any third party app as well as their own apps. That's not even quite possible.

..... Apple allows you to set Chrome as your default browser, a DIRECT competitor...
Next, there is a reason why Apple maps has a bad reputation, and it's not because it gets you to your destination... People dont request this for no reason and Apple has allowed 3rd parties to be the default application. Also, feel is not the same as actually being faster. Google Maps is and will always be superior to Apple maps.
Depends on how you interact with your iDevice.
It definitely matters to people who use Siri a lot like I do as setting Google Maps asthe default, for example, would mean that every time you're making a mapping or navigation request it will open automatically as standard.
That would be much better for me and many others, I'd imagine.
Can't see it happening though, Apple is a bit of a control freak when it comes to these things prioritising their control over flexibility and user experience.
