Will we get a Google Voice app now?

I've been using GV Mobile from Cydia for a little while now, and while it's been pretty good, I'd LOVE an official app.

at&t was never the reason it got put into app store limbo in the first place, all apple. if it does get approved, it will be because of the verizon/google deal and not at&t policy.

i have a google voice number... but haven't really figured out a good use for it, for me, yet???? :confused:

i don't have a ton of people calling me.... and the ones that do call me have my cell number and my home number.... so why do i need a third number for them to call????

I agree. AT&T already said they have no problem with GV.

AT&T orginally only stated that any VOIP system need there approval first and considering GV does not a VOIP system (aka still using your phones minutes) AT&T had no say in it.

The application has not been approved because, as submitted for review, it appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail.

Apple spent a lot of time and effort developing this distinct and innovative way to seamlessly deliver core functionality of the iPhone. Similarly, SMS text messages are managed through the Google hub—replacing the iPhone’s text messaging feature. In addition, the iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways. These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time."

Apple has issues with a lot of the directions that Google has been going, I believe, and this isn't going to change any time soon. I find this next part funny myself.

"We are continuing to study the Google Voice application and its potential impact on the iPhone user experience. Google is of course free to provide Google Voice on the iPhone as a web application through Apple’s Safari browser, just as they do for desktop PCs, or to provide its “Google-branded” user experience on other phones, including Android-based phones, and let consumers make their choices."

So it's OK for Google to let consumers make choices, just not on the iphone.

I have to say the bold I put in proves apples statement is complete BS.
Apple already approved Google sync. Google sync has the users entire contact data based copied off of the iPhone and put on to google's system. Also the entire calandar is put there as well.

Apple will claim it is "reviewing" until the end of time. Apple is not really reviewing the app. They just will not officially rejecting it. They have pigeon holed it and for all intensify purposes it has rejected it.
 
I can kind of see their hesitation before with the way the GV handles call redirects. Assuming that before the AT&T announcement that the app would not be allowed to work on cellular data network then if you had you mobile number forwarded to the GV number you would not receive call or voicemails when off WiFi.

As long as it is capable of bypassing the core phone function I don't believe that Apple will allow it.

I don't know. I mean, that's the POINT of Google Sync. So if a user uses Google Sync they should know what it does. Google Voice is different in that users may not know that the address book is uploaded to their servers as the main point of the app is to route all your phone numbers to a central number.

I'm not trying to defend Apple on this one but I just don't buy your argument.

I'm not sure I'd believe AT&T 100% until I see other AT&T phones have Google Voice. The Google deal with Verizon should help push Apple, through competition, to add GV.

I also have google voice, don't use it a lot. I do use it if there's a chance I won't want the business/person calling me anymore, then I can just block them.

Love GV.

I use it pretty much daily along with gv mobile and voicecentral apps (also non jailbroken). Being in the US and having my entire side of the family up in Canada, now that calls up there are free, it's pretty awesome.

I still doubt we'll see an official app anytime soon though, this was clearly Apple's call.

My AT&T Blackberry Curve 8900 currently has GV on it and works just fine.

You can download GV for all Blackberry and android phones.

What? you don't forward your mobile number to google voice, you forward your google voice number to your mobile. It isnt voice over ip, if you make a call it dials out using your minutes to call through your google voice number to mask your cell number. Making it work over wifi would be pointless as it only uses data to initiate the call.
 
To the people that have Google Voice, how long did it take to get a phone number after your invite request submission?

Did you get it from Blackberry App World or was this installed from a website? The reason why is that AT&T can influence this because you cannot install apps on the iPhone outside of the App Store.
