Will we have to pay for Panther? Jaguar was a paid update wasn't it?

When i bought my iBook it came with 3 software update vouchers - what are they for?? there didn't seem to be any mention of them, it just said to keep them safe!

Depends, but personally I think it'll be a small handling charge for the update CD's....

I don't think Apple can get away with charging full whack for an OS upgrade ever year....

The coupons were for the minor revision updates (if I remember correctly). Major updates are not covered by the coupons, unless Apple decides to.

Expect to pay up to $130 for the next major release of OS X (10.3), maybe less, again depends on how Apple decides to do it.

I, for one, purchased the retail version of 10.1 (not the free update that many others picked up) and then was a bit pissed off when I had to pay full price for 10.2. I did it anyway, within the first week it came out, but I wasn't too happy about it.

People that purchase systems after 10.3 is announced, should be able to get it for a reduced rate. Then again, that is all up to Apple.

I hope that they update the 15" PowerBook to include the newer technologies found in the 12" and 17" models at the WWDC. IF they do, then I will have to seriously consider picking one up. DDR memory, better graphics, and a processor OVER 1GHz would almost be enough to get me to pick one up. An even faster processor would make the laptop more attractive too. Especially since I have an 800MHz model now. :D

What's going to stop them? Jaguar shipped August 24th. Panther looks to be shipping Sept. That's over a year.

Apple is going to charge $129 for Panther. Anyone who thinks they will pay less is going to be upset but Apple is not forcing anyone to upgrade. You do that when you are ready.

10.1

I really can not remember, but I think that the 10.0 to 10.1 upgrade cost was only for shipping and handling...does anyone remember? If yes, then apple might just charge for shipping and handling for 10.3 and then the full price for the next major revision after 10.3

That was ONLY if you went direct to Apple and waited for it to ship. OR if you lucked out and got some of the few copies offered at retail outlets. I wasn't lucky enough to get to the store early enough to get the reduced rate copy (they were out of those). I'm pretty sure that the reduced rate copies didn't come with any of the documentation that came with the full version.

I intend to try and find a copy of 10.3 for a reduced rate. BUT, if I can't, I'll just pay full retail when I'm ready. No point in bitchin and moaning about it.

you will pay.

apple has to recoup its development costs somehow.

just be happy it is only $129. windowx xp is $299, well more than twice the price of a better os.

if you think about it, economies of scale should kick in and allow msft to sell xp at a very low price, but they don't do that. at least apple pays a little attention to this, and prices at a much more reasonable price.

Errrr.... expecting people to blow $100 every year for an OS upgrade.....

Jaguar was a worth while 'paid' upgrade because it finally made OSX a fully useable OS, but I'm not expecting a similar jump from 'Jaguar' to 'Panther'.....
