Let me put it this way...

My MacbookPro 17" has the x1600 and 2.33ghz C2D. I get 60FPS in WoW.

Now consider that the iMac is -more- powerful than that.

It will be fine.

here's something you need to consider:

look for the benchmarks yourself, but they are showing that nvidia offerings before this update are shown to outperform the new imac offering by a considerable degree.

i'm not buying the new imac because of the video card, a $2000+ computer should come with something better than a $99 video card.

the new imac, in my opinion, is like a brand new lamborghini with bicycle tires on it.

How much faster is the 2600 compared to the 1600?

its a x1600 mobile version that also is a bit underclocked, so I guess the 2600 is atleast 20-30% faster.
The 2.8Ghz extreme is much faster than the 2.33Ghz (which is on a slow bus and is outperformed by the new 2.2GHz MBP in almost every cpu intensive tests i've seen).

The new topend iMac will be atleast 20-30% faster than your PB.
THe old topend iMac would have been more than 50% faster in Wow tho.

The 24" iMacs are (and to a degree have always been) a crappy buy. For the price ($1800-$2300 depending on model and revision) you can almost get a Mac Pro and a decent monitor.

The iMac at $1200 though is a pretty decent deal. For your average consumer, at least. A similar Dell is going to run you around $850, and the iMac has significant higher quality. The display is probably nicer (I'm comparing it to the lower priced 18-bit Dell panel, assuming the iMac stuck with the 24-bit), it's likely quieter, has far better software, is easier to setup and maintain, better support, etc etc.

I'm a gamer - at least when I have time. I like to play games, but I'm not in that hardcore crowd (anymore). I picked up an XBox360 and the 2400XT is decent enough to run WoW, Guild Wars, and hopefully StarCraft 2, which is really all I (or most people) are looking for in a PC. I feel like gaming is moving towards two markets: MMO's and console games. There's rarely a big title anymore that doesn't make it one or more console within a year of release unless it's an MMO.

Anyways, back to the original topic, while I have no concrete knowledge, everything I've seen indicates that the x2400xt is roughly as powerful as the x1600 the old iMac had and the old iMacs played WoW pretty well from all accounts so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The WoW forums are blocked for me (at work)... I'm curious what the issue is, though... if you wouldn't mind summarizing or copy/pasting it for me? Thanks!

Sure,

Below is the original post from the user explaining the problem:

Hello!

I've been waiting to upgrade my wife's old iMac for a while now, and as soon as the new iMac came out I jumped on it. Fortunately for me the local apple store had the model I wanted in, so we've already got it in hand.

When I start WoW on the machine, the login display is normal, but when I log into the game, a lot of the terrain textures are messed up - it looks kinda like static. Here is a scaled down pic of what I'm talking about (the original 1680x1050 pic is there too, without the "-small" in the name):

http://www.bobnet.net/sample-small.jpg

This is the mid range 20" iMac with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro (256 meg). The issue is consistent regardless of the resolution; windowed or full screen.

I've done the whole "nuke the Interface and WTF folders" thing without success.

I'm presuming this is just a side effect of being on the bleeding edge, so I thought you guys should know.

Edit: oops, meant aluminum, not stainless steel hehe

Then blizzard replies with:

We'll investigate immediately. It would help if we could establish email contact with you - please drop us a note at wowmacteam123@blizzard.com, and to speed things up, please include a system profile (save as XML) and any screenshots of the behavior.

edit: based on what we have learned, the short term workaround for this issue is to turn off the "enable all shader effects" checkbox in video options. A more comprehensive solution will require a software update, and we are chatting with Apple and ATI about when that will happen. I will keep you posted.

Followed by another blizzard reply:

The hardware in this case is fine, this is a simple driver bug. Apple is aware of the issue with WoW and working with urgency to rectify it

Heh, thanks. Good to know it sounds pretty simple and should hopefully get corrected quickly. Would have though at least one of the dev team for the iMac would be WoW player and they've spotted this before. :p
