I was curious if you will be able to upgrade to the final release of Yosemite from a beta version. Will it automatically show up on the app store once the final release comes out and allow me to perform an update?

You'll be able to go from the DP to the release version directly. I would recommend doing a clean install and restoring your files though, sometimes going directly can cause problems

That's great to hear guys.

When you recommend a clean install. Would this method work:

1) Make an entire time machine backup of your entire system.
2) Install a clean fresh copy of OS X Yosemite final
3) Restore from time machine backup

I would hate to have to reinstall and configure all my apps, that would take forever. Would this method qualify as a clean install too?

Sorry to just jump in here, but no, that wouldn't technically be a clean install. Unless you specify for only certain folders to back up, TM backs up the entire system, much like Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC is bootable, TM is not).

But I am correct in advising to use Migration Assistant, am I not?

… when we get the official version will I have to download the whole NEW OFFICIAL file again or just the remaining part ,as an update?

what I mean is,

will the official version be a small update to the DP or will we have to download everything fresh like someone else would do , as if they were still using mavericks? …

The final version is (always I think??) a full installer and not a delta.

Certainly for Mavericks, last year, Apple used terms such as these:

You will not be able to upgrade from the OS X v10.9 Developer Preview to the final release.

You will not be able to upgrade from the OS X Mavericks Developer Preview to the final release.

Apple was challenged on this in their developer forums and an apple engineer went on there and admitted it was false.

It is actually just badly worded advice. It is still good advice.

What it should have said was something like this:

It is advisable to do a clean install of the final version and not just update from the developer previews to the final version because there might be some bugs left over from the developer previews.

Nevertheless, a delta was provided last year to update from the developer previews to the final version as well as a full installer.

So you can update if you want to, but it is advisable not to and it would be better to do a clean install.

Thanks, and +1

If you have handy a link to that Apple Developer topic, I'll appreciate it. (Was it clarified during beta testing of Mavericks, or of Yosemite?)

One of the main reasons that I always perform a full installation of the publicly released golden master is, to get a public GM Recovery OS.

I was referring to mavericks, not yosemite.

I don't know if a delta will be provided for yosemite to go from developer previews to the final version. But I expect it probably will be.

Even if it isn't, you could probably even use the full installer to update developer previews to the final version. I'd be surprised if you couldn't. And even if you "can't" I bet within 5 minutes of release some clever people would make a workaround - hence why would apple bother with this rubbish (unless there is some seriously bad-ass bug or security issue that totally freaks them out so much that they would totally divorce the developer previews from the final release - but that is unlikely).

Thanks for clarifying re: Mavericks.

Yosemite

… probably even use the full installer to update developer previews to the final version. …

We can abbreviate that :) … simply:

use the full installer to install

– and the presence of a pre-release (e.g. developer preview or public beta) will not normally prevent installation of a publicly released version of the operating system.

More specifically: don't think of that as an 'update'.

(The attention to choice of words is not nitpicking. It's to have a shared understanding of the ways that phrases are most commonly used by Apple.)

Caution (side note)

If it's technically possible to install Mavericks over Yosemite, using Apple's publicly released app, don't think of that as a 'downgrade'
  • do not expect all application support data from 10.10 to work with 10.9.5, and so on
–it may be possible but I should never recommend it.

I am confused

Please excuse my ignorance. I am not a developer but I am simply a user who got in on the previewer program.

Can you help me understand exactly how to go from the DP to the full version when it releases?

Love this thread. Full of 'Yes' and 'No' answers :p

Guess I am waiting for public release to be safe :D

Well last year the final golden master turned out to be the same build as public release for mavericks 10.9 (i.e., build 13A603). So developers basically didn't have to do anything again till the first 10.9.1 betas were released.

So if that happens again for yosemite we won't have to do anything till the first 10.10.1 betas are released.

This is what I do to cut through any possible issues, probably none..

1. Update the final release to your system when it comes out, and use it for a
short time.

2. Wait for Yosemite to be released from the App Store > Download it to the
desktop > Either make a DiskMaker USB thumb drive or do it with the
Terminal code that will come along real soon after the release > Make a
copy > Than shut down the system > Boot up by way of the OPTION key
and the thumb drive inserted. Use the Disk Utility > Erase the updated
installed Yosemite, and > Install clean from the thumb drive.

3. After installing the new fresh Yosemite > Install your programs fresh as well
I know its some work, but now you have a clean system. Now do the Time
Machine back up for later.

I would do that, but instead of restoring from the Time Machine back up I would use Migration Assistant. It will transfer all your files and settings across exactly how they were before.

Better to use Setup Assistant, which is like MA but only appears at the end of the install process. To use MA you have to create a temporary user at the end if the installation, then later migrate in your users, and they can get different UUIDs which can cause problems.
