Streaming music and movies isn't for everybody. I prefer the optimum quality of CDs and Blu-rays so I'm gonna miss it.

The external solution is good for me. Use the drive in my 5.1 from time to time and I get the lack of convenience for sure, but there are workarounds. The day may come where optical discs are non existent... Then I might be more irritated.

I think lot's of us have pulled the optical drive to run SSD's in the DVD bay, I keep telling myself that I need to pick up a cheap external drive on Amazon (there under £20!) or a Blu-ray writer for backups and films but it's been over 2 years and iv not done it yet.
last time I did pull one out was for windows 10 install.

maybe if my amplifier had an optical-in I'd use my macpro for more media like audio/blue ray discs.

I do like Blu-ray films, my eyesight is still good and watching old films you can see the film scratches and grain so maybe when i upgrade my amplifier.

still using a teac AG 980 amp (how i get audio from my macpro :))

PS I do want a blue ray drive for backups of video projects I do, mixed media backups is always a good idea.
just been to lazy to do it

I still need one. But I’m using one of the optical bays for a SSD. I have a music studio. I need to burn CDs from time to time.

Won’t miss the internal optical drive as I burn all the files of each project on one 50GB Blu-Ray on an external writer and then if I ever need it I have to move the writer itself along with the Blu-Ray disc to another machine anyway (because most of my machines don’t have an optical drive and none have Blu-Ray.

So even the best internal optical drive wouldn’t be of much use.

Won't miss them one little bit. The 2 SATA connectors in my cMP are connected to drives. I have an external LG BD burner connected over USB3 for those very occasional times I need one.

I didn't even notice, I was too hung up on the price and other things. I have two in my 5,1, and at one time they were useful and will be when I get around to transferring my few thousand media discs, but in the meantime, life goes on.

Music will be streaming 24bit 96KHz soon enough, so CDs won't really be able to deal with that anyway. HD CDs or Blu-ray music never caught on, so...

An internal optical drive is convenient, but I don’t mind using an external drive. I didn’t use it on the 5,1 much anyways. I like having one in the MBP though. It’s convenient for watching DVDs traveling or going camping.

Nope. I can't even tell you the last time I used an optical drive. They just don't hold enough information anymore and aren't of practical use for most modern workflows.

I still have a 6 CD player in my vehicle, so 'roll my own" CDs and listen to what I want. Also do some video work and some people still like DVDs.

I rip my Blu-Rays to put on my Plex server. I’ll kind of miss the optical Bay.

I’ll be pulling my LibreDrive-enabled 4K Blu-Ray ripping drive out of the 4,1-5,1 and putting it into my media server. The 7,1 will do the Handbrake processing directly from a shared directory on the media server.

ASUS BW-16D1HT with firmware 3.10 LibreDrive patched.
Can you tell me how to get firmware 3.10 LibreDrive patched? I have Firmware Revision: 3.00
...and what does 3.10 LibreDrive patched actually do? I seem to be able to rip Blu-rays completely fine. Even ripped a 4K UHD one before. I've got licensed version of MakeMKV.

I use an ASUS external drive. works great. My PSU also runs a few degrees cooler with the whole DVD drive cage removed.
