i have a 3G S on 3.0 and heavily modified and want to know if I will need to upgrade to 3.1 for MMS to be enabled on the 25th or if it will just start working on all version of the iPhone OS.

thanks,

There will need to be some update.

Some have claimed 3.1.1 and some claim carrier update.

We shall see

I'm on 3.0 using the 5.0 Carrier file, and my MMS is working perfectly. So no, I don't think you'll have to be on 3.1.

Why would they take away my ability to MMS, and force me to update firmware on the 25th? I don't see why AT&T would care what firmware I have. It's the carrier file that would seem like it would matter.

AT&T hasn't given you the ability to MMS. That's a hack - unsupported by AT&T.

As to why they would care what firmware you're on?... If their partner (Apple) cares, then they might care.

I am jailbroken on 3.0 with carrier ipcc 5.1 and things work great.
My friend has a 3.0 not jb running ipcc 5.1 and mms works just fine

Actually they have, sort of.

AT&T has been systematically removing the MMS account blocks of all iPhone accounts in preparation for Sept 25th.

On those accounts where the block is removed, MMS works just as it will continue to work on and after Sept 25th if the MMS carrier file has been updated.

Some areas have had MMS ability for several weeks, while other areas not yet with just a week to go.

I have MMS & tethering all working via hacks on OS 3.0.1. My girlfriend is on stock OS 3.1 and no MMS for her.

Get hold of the AT&T 5.1 carrier file (all over the web)

Put it on desktop

Open iTunes, do option + upgrade button, select the 5.1 carrier file and let it install, reboot, go to Settings/general/network and fill in MMS APN, user & PW (same as you are using) and she will probably have MMS also.

A phone does not have to be JB to update carrier settings.

Worked on my wife's non-JB 3G.

how will this be done on the 25th when its issued by Att??

I just returned from two weeks in mainland China with my jb and unlocked 3GS on 3.0. When I switched my sim card from AT&T to China Mobile (which btw had excellent 3G coverage in Shenzhen) I also had MMS enabled. I sent several MMS messages to try out the feature, and all worked fine.

I am definitely no expert on jailbreaking or carrier codes, but it seems interesting to me that my 3.0 software was capable of MMS with a China Mobile sim card, but is going to need an upgrade to have this feature enabled with AT&T.

3.1 is not needed for MMS, only a carrier file that allows it and the block removed from your AT&T account.

I have a jailbroken 3G w/ 3.0.0 FW and 5.1 carrier file, MMS and tethering work flawlessly.

I also have a non-jailbroken 3GS w/ 3.0.1 FW and 5.1 carrier file, MMS and tethering work flawlessly on it also.

MMS has been working on these two phones for a couple weeks now.

I used the 5.1 carrier file and now my group texting doesn't work.

I see the MMS stuff but it fails to send.

Did you fill in the boxes on Settings General/Network/Cellular Data ?

APN wap.cingular
Username leave blank
Password leave blank
MMSC Http://MMSC.cingular.com
MMS Proxy wireless.cingular.com:80

The rest should already be filled in

Make sure to hit the Reset Settings button, re-spring and it should work if your block is removed.

3.0 works fine with MMS. We have been using it since the 3gs came out in the UK.

It's the carrier settings. The software itself is fully capable of supporting MMS at 3.0

When the updated carrier file is released, I'm hoping that I can shift+update just that file and leave the 3.1 file uninstalled. I'm worried it will try to do both at the same time and I'll be screwed.

hello. i finally got mms sorta working using the ipcc here for 3.0
http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/2009/09/12/how-to-enable-mms-picture-messaging-on-your-iphone/

when i send an mms to myself, it comes from a random phone number and as the "text with link to message" (instead of the image)
when i send an mms to a friend, the image works, but it also comes from a random phone number

over the months, i have tried every single method possible, every ipcc out there, every mms network settings.

now that the 50th try this morning finally got a result, it's having the above issues.

anybody else have it working but shows a random number?
