Currently have the ios9 beta on my ipad air 2 but from what ive read, only the basic movies app will be allowed for split view.

Will Apple allow youtube to be in split view once ios9 is released?

Hopefully. There's an API but Google is notorious for updating their iOS apps extremely late.

Is there really an API for that? I thought I read Apple wasn't allowing any 3rd party apps in the split view (at least for now)?

For now, no. Because iOS is in beta. They aren't allowed to put updated apps for iOS 9 on to the App Store until it's released. Once iOS 9 is released many apps will be updated for split screen and any other new iOS 9 feature.

No problem. And yes, like afsynder said, Apple has provided the API for it. Among other stuff like slide over, PiP, Deep Search (where spotlight can search content within the apps), Siri "remind me about this" (where Siri will know what you're looking at on the screen and remind you of that if you say "remind me of/about this", App Thinning (apps will use less space.) And I'm sure there's a couple other things I'm forgetting.

Is siri's 'this' functionality restricted to reminders? I was hoping it would allow for "share this with mom" or "take me here" or something like that.
Is that possible? I guess that's what "now on tap" is.

I just hope when iOS 9 is released, that they let you pick-n-choose which apps show up in the slide over menu. I don't want to have to scroll through all of Apple's (and soon 3rd party's) apps, to find the one i'm looking for.

Agreed. I hope they'll have something like a row of 5 recent used apps and under that all apps sorted in alphabetical order with the alphabet bar like in contact at the side to quickly find the app you are looking for. Then you don't need to disable any and you get a workflow with 5 recent ones.

My feeling is that once we officially have iOS 9 any and every video, music, productivity app should allow split view. The only apps I don't care for in split view are games but why not? Some one out there may want to play games and watch a movie at the same time.
I'm literally typing this out right now on split view and I would love to watch YouTube at the same time.
