iPadOS 26 promoted a lot this windowed mode but in reality it’s just useless, stage manager still feels better to me, a good thing is stage manager some iPads that didn’t supported this feature but it’s not a huge deal…

I’m not a big fan of stage manager on iPad minis so it’s just cool on some iPads like the iPad Air 4 I guess… Not a revolution here… iPadOS 26 is a fail !

(I’ve being using windowed mode for a couple of months and this opinion)

I predict that next year’s releases on iOS and iPadOS 27, we’ll see an entirely new multitasking system, not to replace the one which shipped with iPadOS 26 but in addition to it, perhaps as an alternative or enhancement. The reason why is because of the foldable iPhone. There will need to be a way for users to use two apps side by side in an intuitive way via touch with this device without relying on tiny click spots. The same method is highly likely to be ported over for use on the iPad. This year’s regression is an embarrassment but also a huge disadvantage when compared with competitors. Android tablets and foldables have fantastic app split functionality which iPadOS in its current state does not and is cumbersome to use. Just thinking out aloud here though.

Well I mean I started to use my ipad a lot more after the ipadOS 26 update. for me its probably one of the best ipad releases. splitview when used constantly felt boring and monotonous to use, stage manager is good but somewhat confusing and limiting as well, windowed mode isnt as boring as splitview but isn’t as confusing as stage manager.

It really depends on your iPad model, for those who didn’t had a compatible iPad with stage manager it might be good but for those who already had this it’s just a boring update

As long it is easier to resize a window by accident than getting it back to its original pairing with another window, iPadOS 26 adds more friction (ie, extra work) than it adds extra functionality.

Being able to resize and freely position Slide Over windows, an absolute win. Being able to tile three or four windows to fill the screen, definitely welcome. But having to use a menu on each window to do the latter, definitely a fail, as is the inability to change the order of tiled windows by drag’n’drop.

Combining the default window size being full screen with the default behaviour of windows overlapping themselves leads to windows constantly getting hidden behind (other) full screen windows. Applies to half-windows as well, too easy to have two half-windows of the same size and position on top of each other. Default window sizes and default window positions lead to windows hiding each other by design.
