Hello all, first post to MacRumors. I have replaced the 1TB Fusion drive in my iMac (late 2014) with an 960GB SSD from OWC earlier this year. I have been trying to install Windows 10 with or without using BootCamp with zero success. Sometimes it looks like it's going to happen and then during the Windows installation process it comes back with an error. I have Google'd and Bing'd and tried various installations with or without MacOS Catalyst installed with no success. Catalyst installs fine of course.

The Fusion hard drive is gone but the 128GB SSD that worked with the Fusion drive is still there. I have tried installing Windows 10 to it's own partition on the 128GB and the 960GB SSD with no success. I thought putting Windows 10 on the 128GB SSD would be a great idea but the installation just goes nowhere.

Has anyone successfully installed Windows 10 into its own partition and be able to boot to MacOS or Windows successfully. I do have Parallels Desktop installed but that is not the ideal situation for me.

Thanks all for your time and help,

Bill from Nova Scotia

I had Parallels Desktop too. It’s a money pit. I’ve got it for free, that’s why I use it. It’s easier and you can run windows and Mac on the same screen..

Why not get a cheap or free PC?

I’ve gotten a full PC setup (used) for free!

I could get another complete computer but I already have an awesome desktop with a fantastic screen. If I could get this system to accept Windows 10 I would only have to pay for Windows 10 which I already have purchased. I don't really have the room for a second system.

Someone else out there must have the same setup as me.

I've got the same set-up as you...but had no problem installing Bootcamp via Bootcamp Assistant.

The non-Bootcamp Assistant method is linked here (https://ihowtoguides.com/how-to-install-windows-10-on-mac-without-bootcamp/), but in summary:
  1. Create a W10 install USB stick (see instructions above)
  2. Insert W10 install USB into the back of the iMac
  3. Restart iMac holding down the option key at start-up to get to to start-up selection screen
  4. Select W10 install drive
  5. Let W10 set-up run
  6. BE CAREFUL HERE
  7. Erase ALL partitions on the 128GB SSD (REMEMBER, I SAID BE CAREFUL HERE)
  8. Install W10
  9. Copy & install bootcamp drivers

What’s your problem with BootCamp? What error?
