Windows 7 30 Day Trial, Does the OS Downgrade?

Hi, I'm wondering if:

I get an install of W7 on bootcamp, the Ultimate version, and I use it for a 30 day trial... ...And I register with a key for Windows 7 Home Premium, will it downgrade me to Home Premium? Will it wreak havoc on my computer and spit hardware at me?

I doubt it will wreak havoc. My guess is that it won't accept the wrong key.

Each key is for that specific disk.

Even if you had 2 disks of Home premium - enter the key from the other disk and it won't work.

This is false. I have 2 Win 7 pro licenses and it does not matter which disk I use with which license. The keys are 'locked' to the hardware that they are first activated on though but a simple call to Microsoft let's you install on a different machine (only on machine at a time though)

As to the OP's question. It is my infer standing that a windows 7 install disk contains every version of windows 7 and that you can use a key for a higher version for a lower version ( don't know if it unlocks the higher version's features though) but not a key for a lower version for a higher version install.

My bet is that you will have to reinstall windows to move from Win7 Ultimate to Win7 Home Premium.

This is my experience to. I have not seen Windows serial number tied to a specific disk, however they are tied to which version of Windows being installed.

Disk doesn't matter for the most part (there are some keys that will only work with certain builds).

As for the question, if you use a Home Premium key on the Ultimate disk, you will get Home Premium. The key is what unlocks what you get and there is no way to get around that. If you want to try Ultimate, you can install it for 30 days without a key and then you will be prompted to use one. If you don't, you will not be able to login to the machine until you do supply and register a valid key.
