I havent even loaded in onto my computer yet. I have been up for 3 hours doing a upgrade from vista, on an brand new dual core computer and its just taken a lightyear to do anything. Is this normal?

Its not a beta test or anything, its the real finished pro version, which i got from my university. Being a research student, we often get pre releases of microsoft stuff through the academic alliance.

I just wanna go to bed tbh.

how long did anyone else take to do upgrade?

Took me an hour and half on my Macbook 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo + 4Gb Ram. Hope that helps ( I got it from my university too :p MSDN FTW?)

Oh I did a clean install btw.

Hang in there with the installation process, it is well worth it. RC2 froze on my friend and I told him to restart the installation and it ended up working fine second time around. Windows 7 is a great snappy OS, basically, a fixed Vista that runs smoother than XP. Finally. Only took... way too long.

no way man

I really hate win7, it's so ugly. Actually, any Windows OS is ugly.

I suggest not to put win7 on your mac, seriously.

If your just doing it so you can load MS-DOS .exe files, then just get Crossover.

Works really well for me :D

3 hours to do an upgrade, when a clean install would take around 30 minutes. Tell me again how upgrading is ever a good idea? I would call it the lazy way out, but you end up actually doing more work in the long run.

It sounds like somethings going wrong with your upgrade. When I updated my PC from Vista Home Premium it took less than 45 minutes and that's on a relatively low powered mini PC with a dual core Pentium and only 1GB of RAM.

That was using the Windows 7 Release Candidate but I wouldn't expect any dramatic changes with the official release version.

A lightyear is a measurement of distance, not time.

Also, dont upgrade, do a clean install. An upgrade on any OS is a bad idea when you can just do a clean install and have everything fresh and new.

I haven't seen W7 yet, but from what I've seen, vista is just as "bubbly" looking than my snow leopard.. ehhe.

Personally I think OSX is looking very tired, Win 7 looks a lot crisper and yes, the eye candy is better :). Both have their merits though. Enjoying having the option of both and not being as partisan as I would have been prior to having that option.

Never tried the Vista upgrade and wouldn't recommend it. Clean install is approx 20mins (certinaly quicker than a clean SL install) on a fast machine and I just put the 32bit version on a netbook last night (i.e. a calculator with a big screen) and it didn't take much longer than 20mins either. Massive performance improvement on the low powered machine over the Release Candidate too.

I do not understand how OSX can "look tired". It's a proven interface that works and there is absolutely no point in making changes to it for the sake of doing so. While Aero for Windows is a step forwards in some areas it is also a step backwards in others for the sake of "eye candy". Whoever decided that it would be good to have transparency everywhere needs to be dragged out into the street and shot. In much the same way as the "Translucent Menu Bar" option should be disabled in OS X, so Opaque Windows should be enabled as soon as possible in Vista/7. Don't get me started on Flip 3D...

There is a lot to be said for Windows' ability to display live previews of open windows and the various ways in which you can organise the Windows around the screen. However, it can also be argued that Windows 2000 provided the most functionality for general use with an interface that was both functional and minimal.

Remember, eye candy is not important and functionality should never be thrown away in favour of it.
