Windows 7 + MBP + Gaming

Hey just wanted to ask if it is possible that my late08 mbp which runs under WIN7 home premium is getting too hot while playing?!?!?

Just played about 15 mins when my screen (aion)ingame froze (but sound + mouse didnt) and a few seconds later i've heard skype shutting down - and a few seconds later everything started to shutdown -> bam bluescreen for about 1 sec -> restart
happened now 3 times in an hour..

Any ideas?

Are you running coolbook or anything on OS X? If you are, if you don't power down the PC before you reboot into 7, it'll keep the settings, possibly not revving up the fans fast enough, and cause it to overheat.

Also, don't over-clock it. That goes without saying.

While the computer should work at an angle while you're in bed, partially covered by a blanket, Apple will tell you that their computers are ONLY designed to be used on a flat solid surface. Don't let that deter you: If your computer is hard-rebooting, then there's a hardware issue somewhere.

You mentioned a blue-screen. Can you go into Window's Event Viewer and see what errors it's throwing up. That can help us greatly in trying to understand what's going on.

My initial guesses are either bad RAM or overheating, both which Apple should fix so long as your PC is under warranty.

By the way, how is Aion? I'm thinking about switching from WoW to Aion if it's good enough...

No apps installed for cooling right now - my reseller told me, i shall not do

And i've got my MBP on a Griffin elevator and underneath there's my Ventilator (cooling my mbp - i try to keep it as cool as possible)

Hm, so i don't think its possible that CPU/HDD is getting too hot, probably nvidia gforce 9600 is gettin hot?

I haven't tried other games (just installed win7) but in the morning i've been playing for a while (1-2 hours) without problems...

So i've to take a look at this Event Viewer (where do i find?)

BTW: i was wondering why my OSX slows down after a while working on my bed (REALLY SLOW!!)
It was really fookin hot! so its really better to get a solid flat surface - cloth = no good idea!

@aion: great game so far (lvl 20) but wait till NCSOFT fixed the server problem..( wait for login -> 1h - 8h -.-)
and leveling 30-50 is like doing cowruns/baalruns in diablo2 xD little bit grinding...but atmosphere rules )

I have similar issues with video editing/ mkv playback and running skype with my unibody MBP in Windows. To fix it I first boot into OSX and run smcFanControl to increase the rpm to at least 4k then restart into Windows keeping the default fan speed high. As soon as Windows starts run task manager, processes and right click KbdMgr.exe (or bootcamp for SL) and set the CPU affinity to CPU1 only, then run your game..

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT leave your MBP on your bed (or any other cloth material) for a long period of time, ESPECIALLY when under heavy use. It prevents the machine from properly cooling.

As far as your machine crashing in Windows from heat, that's odd. They're supposed to get a little hot (the aluminum case disperses heat that way) but not crash. I remember playing Age of Conan for hours on end on my early '08 MBP under Vista 64. The fans would be going full bore the whole time and the case would be kinda warm, but everything ran fine and never crashed.

It sounds somewhat like a hardware issue.

so i believe its not a problem of my mbp...

i don't know the exact issue, but i did an update of my broadcom driver (because i've got this disturbing audio issue which appears with that old driver)

and it looks as it would work fine now

Installed "broadcom 4322ag version 5.3.x.x.x" (october 08 imo)
bootcamp = 5.1.x.x.x afaik...
you get it e.g.: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/

you have to update manually by choosing broadcom hardware -> update manually -> drivers from list -> choose root -> 5.3.x.x.x.....
