It sets it up so the maximum size that the virtual machine can take is 40GB so that will be the capacity of your VM. The windows 7 install takes around 6 or 7GB. The size of the VM file will be only the size of the OS until you add more things to it, and then the size of the file will expand up to 40GB, unless you set it to pre-allocate space for Windows 7.

I have installed W7 twice and for me it takes more than 10 Gig every time.
Last time it took 14 Gigs so any hint on how to reduce would be extremely welcome!
