I have a brand new 3.06 ghz, 4gb, 7200 RPM HDD MBP17.

I got Windows 7 working great--even with aero running.

Sometimes, it runs lightening fast, but other times it lags like crazy.

Does your installation always run fast?

I was thinking that it may lag sometimes because the 7200 rpm hdd has a documented problem.

What exactly is laggy? Aero? Check your power management settings. Does it only slow down when you are on battery power? Windows might default to turn your graphics card down to save power, which may cause things to lag.

I haven't even tried Windows 7 yet but I'm sure it'll work just fine, like Windows Vista Ultimate. Maybe you're running too many applications when it starts to be laggy? Or maybe you have a trojan.

I'm guessing that you are pure business with your windows partition since its not your primary OS. Its very likely you download and save a lot but don't idle very often. Windows Search 4 is pretty intense on usage of CPU and RAM (it indexes very well though) so try turning off indexing and see if that makes a difference.

Well I have noticed that application launches are much slower than Windows 7 on a weaker PC. Once they have been launched however, they are just as fast if not faster.

Sometimes when I am moving a window around, there is a stutter in the movement. After I drag it around a little, it becomes fast/smooth.

I am not sure if this is due to my faulty 7200 RPM hdd.

It Windows 7 via bootcamp running just as smooth as it does on PCs for the rest of you?

umm are you using the 9600GT and not the 9400M?? (dont know if you can choose in windows).

it could be the graphics drivers lagging a bit. try upgrading them to something new?

i doubt it would be the HD.

I have Windows 7 running on my penryn 2.4ghz macbook pro with a 5400rpm hard drive and I haven't noticed your lag problems. Something is definitely up.

See what your computer is doing in the background. I know one thing I had to get used to with using windows 7 more frequently than leopard right now is the number of higher intensity background threads.

Like virus definitions scans/updates, windows updates, indexing, etc etc.

My setup runs fine - but I suspect your hunch is right with the Seagate 7200.4 drive. I have just fitted one to a Dell XPS laptop and after a few hours it now hangs just like a slow SSD in a netbook because the firmware falsely triggers the shock sensor. I have one ready to go in my MBP but that's getting sold and I'll wait for WD to release a 500Gb Black. I should have known better buying a new Seagate model with all the hassle in the past!

EDIT: Just found a monster thread on notebook review - I'm on page 130 so far. Seems like if you have 0001 firmware drive there's a hanging problem!
