Windows 7 UI changes are impressive!

I don't know about you guys, but I was interested to see what M$ was doing with Windows 7 UI and came across this demo video.

The new taskbar and associated features are impressive, intuitive and functional.

It's a long video and you'll have to ff through the first bit to get to the demo part, but colour me impressed.

the peek thingy looks really awesome.

im not trying to start an OS X vs Windows debate but a lot of the new UI features are already in OS X like large icons at the bottom, right click menus, peek (Exposé), lights under program icon.

i still hate the Office ribbon, flip3d, gadgets on the side by default (although
i like how they can be placed anywhere).

also when he talked about the very small number of users that hide or place the taskbar on the left or right. that reminded me of the high percentage of OS X users that hide or place the Dock on the left or right as its easy to do and looks good.

i definately like the UI better than Vista and i will upgrade to it when it os released. but OS X will still be my number one OS.

Well, I gotta admit that I'm happy that so far Win 7 features is not like an exact copy of OS X like what Vista did, Gadget vs Widgets, Finder like, 3D Chess, Flip 3D and etc.

I like that they add a few features on their own.

Lets hope the OS performs as good as it looks, netbook compatibility sounds promising (meaning it will have a much smaller footprint then Vista).

Observations:

This guy is a great presenter. I have no idea why MS chose that marketing women to do the Windows 7 desktop presentation during Sinofsky's keynote. She looked nervous and awkward.

To me it seems that MS are finally getting round to having a decent taskbar. He made the point that the Windows 1.0 taskbar predates the dock. Well, the dock has been in use for the past 7 years, and exposé has been in use for the past 5 years. MS is only going to bring a useful taskbar to its Windows customers in 2010!

They've only now noticed now that balloon tips are annoying!

On a side note, the networking control panel shown during Sinofsky's keynote still looks like a complete mess.

Please see my edit above. I meant that for some features, I liked the Mac OS way of implementing them better.

Windows 7 does look interesting.

Some of us have been hearing about how absolutely wonderful the new Windows UI is since Windows 3.0. The easily impressed may be impressed, but the rest of us will take a pass. Thank you.

While obviously I strongly favor OSX, I understand that my company (160,000 employees!) will not be switching to apple any time soon (or ever). I use my work PC far more than my personal computer (unfortunately!) and I really hope they get windows 7 in order. It looks promising, and lets face it, strong competition is good primarily for us, the end users. A great windows product can only strengthen OSX (or OS11, or whatever).

We are still using XP - I hear hints that we were switching to Vista soon - I hope our IT dept just waits another 12 months or so for 7. Though I guess it would be longer than that as large companies tend to sit on the sidelines for a bit to see how things go and test after the release.

I understand where you're coming from. I strongly prefer OSX as well but I like to keep an open mind. And I don't think you're speaking for everyone. This is just a preview and like someone said, "competition is good for all of us". The great thing is that we are able to run both OS's on our intel Mac's.
