I have wondered how productive one could be on a 7/8 inch tablet running a full desktop OS. So I installed Splashtop 2 on my Nexus 7 and on my Windows 8.1 partition. The good thing about Splashtop is it has Windows 8 tablet gestures. I found Windows 8.1 is almost unusable in desktop mode. I had to constantly zoom in to wrap my fingers around icons--even with touch mode enabled on Office.
Personally, if Microsoft is serious about making a tablet that will compete with the Nexus 7 and iPad, they need to just get rid of the desktop mode and build a Metro version of Office. Having the Desktop on a 7 inch tablet will create bloat and adds extra cost. Using a mouse and keyboard with a 7" tablet is difficult. The screen is too small to have more than a foot or two from your face.
That is my review of Windows 8 on a smaller form factor. I think most users would consider a much bigger tablet if they wanted to run x86 apps. However, if they created an Xbox equivalent of the PS Vita, then I might consider it.
What about you guys? What would you want to see in 7/8 Win 8 inch tablet to make you consider it over the iPad Mini or Nexus 7?
