I have wondered how productive one could be on a 7/8 inch tablet running a full desktop OS. So I installed Splashtop 2 on my Nexus 7 and on my Windows 8.1 partition. The good thing about Splashtop is it has Windows 8 tablet gestures. I found Windows 8.1 is almost unusable in desktop mode. I had to constantly zoom in to wrap my fingers around icons--even with touch mode enabled on Office.

Personally, if Microsoft is serious about making a tablet that will compete with the Nexus 7 and iPad, they need to just get rid of the desktop mode and build a Metro version of Office. Having the Desktop on a 7 inch tablet will create bloat and adds extra cost. Using a mouse and keyboard with a 7" tablet is difficult. The screen is too small to have more than a foot or two from your face.

That is my review of Windows 8 on a smaller form factor. I think most users would consider a much bigger tablet if they wanted to run x86 apps. However, if they created an Xbox equivalent of the PS Vita, then I might consider it.

What about you guys? What would you want to see in 7/8 Win 8 inch tablet to make you consider it over the iPad Mini or Nexus 7?

a better place
Ironically they have windows 8 phone

Works great on phones.

What they should have done is made windows 8 tablet and based it more on Windows 8 Phone experience, but added features from Windows 8 / RT (bit more customisation and added notification centre etc..)

Instead they have Windows 8 - a neither one nor the other experience. Regardless of form factor windows desktop mode is not designed for finger input and neither are the majority of normal windows applications.

Whilst start menu works well, as already proven by the dismal uptake of Windows RT - a start menu only based OS is a recipe for tablet failure.

They are building a Metro Office app.

The Acer 8.1 runs a full version Windows 8.

It is just a slower experience.

Also for the posters above, Windows 8.1 will be more Windows 8 phone like.
