Windows Box for Gaming? Mac for everything Else?

Hey everyone, I was thinking in my own mind a few things:

Basically a girlfriend of mine wants a computer for gaming purposes. Basically, I can get a barebones box off Newegg, slap a decent videocard and bang, she'll be playing Sims 2 with actual framerates compared to her laptop currently.

Which got me thinking. Currently neither of my machines are gaming machines.

Originally my thinking was that I would eventually get a PowerMac or at least an iMac that would have respectable gaming performance while still preventing me from having to revert back to Windows OS. But, looking at NewEgg, it makes more economic sense to just have a simple Wintel box around for gaming purposes. I mean, concieveably I can purchase a system and some upgrades and the price will weigh in around a top end Mac Mini and have superior gaming performance. Only drawback is that it's Windows.

Has the thought of having a wintel box for gaming only ever crossed anyone's mind?

Yeah, that's what i do. There are just too many Windows only games like Rome Total War that I want to play. Plus the premium on a games capable Power Mac is just too great.

I would wait and see if someone will find a video driver for the mac/windows duel boot. Then you just get a nice 20"imac or Macbook pro. Duel boot windows and you could have both machines in one small form factor.
 
I remember a site years ago I used to make XP a bit leaner called Blackviper.com (know it?) which seems to be down currently but I'd go there if you want to find all the processes to cut off, it even has a games section so you can strip XP right down to the only stuff you need to boot and play games with the max resources left to throw into games.
 
A true gaming box is still goin gto be expencive.

those cheap computers are cheap for a reason, they make great type writers, but very poor gaming machines.

I know there isn't the range of games for the Mac platform as there are for the Windows, but the ones that are on the mac run pretty well. I play Halo on my CD1.8GHz MBP with 1.5GB RAM at full specs in Rosetta, and its pretty good. Im taking a guess that when it becomes a UB it will run perfectly at full specs.
See if the games you are interested in are available on the Mac. If not, yeah go for a gaming PC box.
 
Yeah, I read that just now. Forget it, back to getting a PowerMac
