I'm using Vista ultimate 32bit, on the admin account.

Every time I try to add 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com to the very last line, it won't let me save the file within note pad.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to correct the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I assume this is the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file? If so, I recall it saying that formatting will not be saved and I clicked OK anyway. Is this what you are getting or is it asking to Save As?

Doesn't matter if your in the Admin account that's just half of it. find notepad in your start menu RIGHT CLICK it and select run as administrator.

Then find the file open it and add that and then save (to find the file inside of notepad locate the folder it's in and then select all files and folders in the dropdown box in to the right of the file name field.

Do not save as when you save that will create a new file. Just select save once you have edited the file.

Im in the same boat...my notepad wont let me save either...keeps saying path not recognized or something...seems easy enough to do but mine wont accept that redirect either...let me know if you ever solve it...thx

Try reading this thread beyond the first post.
In post #2, I gave a link to the Microsoft article that gives you the solution.

yup..did that first thing..still got the path not recog.....the instructions dont work...it says for Vista to hit edit then save...I dont have a save under edit...just a save under file.....anyway it asks if you want to save the changes to Notebook and it wont let me/us...so I just said no to changes and then "pinged" 74.208.105.171..and i got a good reply back...am I good to go?

If you open your hosts file again are the changes you tried to make there?
Pinging the address doesn't prove anything, of course you'll get a reply.

What you want to do is a traceroute to gs.apple.com
If you get 17.151.36.30 then you're still connecting to Apple's server.

I don't think you can be running notepad as administrator, then. Did you right-click and choose "run as administrator" as Goodeye suggested?

oh yea...this is my umpteen time to do it....just tried it again when I saw this thread.....

I did enter it in a "host.20090216-175936.backup"...but not the "host" file....will that work

Might Spybot or some other software be preventing you from making these changes? Try editing it in Spybot (Advanced Mode, Tools>Hosts File).

I got rid of it..hoping it would delete all those million host Ips...it did not, they are all still there
