Hi,
I've been searching and looking around the forum but haven't found a specific answer so far. Sorry if this is a common question, but didn't seem to find it, just topics on specific cards.
Question:
Can I buy any windows graphics card, that fit the hardware specification of Mac Pro 2008? Considering correct pci-e port, bus speed and electricity consumption that MacPro 2008 can provide. Then abandon OSX completely, and do a clean instal of Windows 7?
By any card, I looking at recent ones released in 2011 ish, ATI and Nvidia. Good price < performance ratio.
Will it run, without flashing or modifying the card in anyway. And I mean windows only, no OS X installation.
Problem / Situation:
Today my 2008 MacPro (v3.1) with a 8800GT nvidia card said goodnight. I believe the graphics card did, rest of the computer is fine. It crashes half way during boot (tried all the different resets) and sometimes during that crash, the screen may start flickering orange. Bit different reaction when I try to boot from CD, I can hear the computer loading the CD and all, but all I see on my screen is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XY_pkR-pl4
After a lot of searching for a replacement graphics card, its hard to find a good solution. You can pay a lot for an official card by apple which isn't really that good preformance, compeered to equal price windows card. I see that the windows cards can be flashed and stuff to work with OS X, but it all seems a bit risky.
I want a high performance card now as I do play games on this computer and do 3D animation work. The 8800GT card have been the lowest performance component of my computer so far, great to get a upgrade.
