I'm all ears as to how you would play .wmv video from places like CNN. I found no other way than to install it just for the plugins.

I'm no fan of Windows Media Player, but I must say it's much better on the Mac than on the PC. On the PC it's a bloated, annoying program that tries to do way too many things and doesn't do any of them well, not to mention a horrible UI. At least on the Mac it only does one thing, and it does it reasonably well.
