A co worker needs to take a class and his teacher will only allow work to be done with windows compatible software. His solution to the problem was to use bootcamp and install windows. His question is can he install windows on and external hard drive or does he have to partition the drive in his imac.

I see. I am pretty sure Boot Camp only allows you to partition the main Macintosh HD to put bootcamp on, but I may be wrong. As in, you can only run windows from your main HD.
