I just bought a new LaCie HDD today to use for a time machine backup. I partitioned the external hdd to have 32 GB set aside for a possible Windows installation. I tried installing windows and apparently you cannot install windows onto a USB/FireWire device.

I have Windows on a virtual machine through Virtual Box on my iMac now. Is there a possible way to have Windows installed on my external hard drive?

You can definitely put your VM on the external drive and run it that way. I use VMWare, so maybe a Virtualbox user can help you find and move the files.

You can't however, run Windows easily natively i.e. Boot Camp on an external.
