Just a quick question -

if i buy windows XP and install it to my computer is it possible for me to remove mac OS TEN and use it purely as a windows *boot up in windows*

if it is when vista is released, could i just put it in and it'd install easily enough?

would wirelss/bluetooth/BUILT IN ISIGHT+MIC work?

thanks so much!

For Windows XP: you'll need to install it through Bootcamp and that will require a minimum of 5GB for an OSX partition. However, once installed you won't ever have to noticed that (i.e. it'll boot directly into Windows if you tell it to).

Apparently Vista can be installed directly.

Note that it's probably a good idea to keep OSX installed for firmware updates (such as the one that was released today).

oh so when I need to update the computer I cannot do it through windows?

Is there no way of completley removing OS X and making it updatable through windows (don't go out your way to double-check, just tell me no!)

so if i just delete all my programmes for mac ( i really do not need it - at all ) so i can make this partition as small as possible, it will be as good as a windows computer?

Once more can I use isight, because that'd be a real step back if i couldn't.

thanks guys.

At least for now, firmware updates are only available through OSX. Anyway, I know this is not the purpose of the thread, but OSX is a great OS and maybe you should try it out.

oh i know psyco it's fantastic
i KNOW its better than windows.

it's just that for my use (RM) i need windows and seen as thought M$ has completley ripped off os ten, i might as well use vista.

i've been a mac user for just over a year, and im very sad to see it go, but I need to go back!

one last try, will iSight work on it :p ?

if i buy some extra RAM could I tell the difference betwen an extra 512 or 1GB, or could I go for the cheaper option?
thanks.

ahh yes i see thanks alot!

so if i go on eBay now and buy XP with a free upgrade of vista when its released, as long as i do it through bootcamp it should all(isight/bluetooth) be there when i log onto XP/vista?

Sorry about my naivety, this process confuses me tremendously.
thanks alot ;]

Not everything on the OS X side is replicated under Boot Camp – Apple continually releases new drivers to add functionality. And I don't believe you can remove OS X entirely from the machine. I could be wrong, of course.

MacIntels boot with EFI while all versions of windows support BIOS to boot up. Vista, upon release, will NOT support any type of EFI, although the guys at http://refit.sourceforge.net/info/vista.html might have something to say about it. Also, like others have said, dont bet on apple releasing windows firmware updater software anytime soon.

Bottom line is that you're MUCH better off leaving OSX on the smallest partition possible and boot using bootcamp.

Never fully expect everything to be there. And if it is there, dont plan on it fully being implemented.

If you really want a laptop without OSX on it you're much better off getting a windows native laptop. You'll get a second mouse button, fans that kick on when they should, and much better warranty support (as in don't expect them to be much help when OSX isn't on your computer).
