Although Microsoft reported a strong fiscalQ3 earnings report, they neglected to include any specific sales numbers for their Windows Phone devices. In January, they boasted shipping 1.5 million Windows Phones to carriers, but according to Russian tech analyst Eldar Murtazin, the actual number bought by end-users is only 674,000 units.

I would be shocked if it was this low tbh. If Microsoft would release some solid activation/sales numbers then all of this negative speculation would end.

I don't know what this kind of news will do for the platform but it isn't good.

I think theres more Windows Phone facebook members than that (Which was running at 1/6 users earlier), so no.

Edit:620,000 users of Facebook on Windows Phone

That would probably mean 3-4million shipped, and over 1.5million sold in that case

Don't worry. Once the Nokia-Microsoft partnership gets into full swing, we'll see the rise of WP7 and the gradual fall of iOS.

In the meantime, relax.

How do you come up with 1.5 million phones sold based on 620,000 facebook windows phone users?

Gee, you've got something positive to say about Apple everywhere you turn.

I realize you're not a fanboy for Windows, but I'd say you strongly fit into the realm of an 'anti-fanboy' against Apple...

It takes a bit of reading and thinking. Try it out.

Anyways. Like I said. On an earlier statistic ~1in6 WP7's shipped were using the facebook connection app. If we apply that same statistic based on 620thousnad users of the facebook app we estimate roughly 3.6million phones shipped. If 3.6 million devices shipped, then clearly they sold over 1.5 million that they initially shipped to consumers, no? Its not like they are shipping 2.1 million devices when they are already stockpiled.

Edit: I just looked ino it more. The statistic is # of devices sold from launch till the the of Q4. Thats 11-10-10 until 12-31-10. Makes sense.

as of Dec 2010, MS sold 1.5M units to carriers as stated here on their website. sell through is a crap shoot since Samsung and LG are never quite as forward as i'd like about their operational/financial performance.

however, WP7 sales should start seeing more gains as hardware companies diversify their product line away from Google. if that doesn't do it then AT&T and Verizon will force it to happen. if that still doesn't happen, Apple taking 50%** of the industry's operating profit margin will probably force Samsung and HTC to start pressuring out the marginal players (LG, Moto and/or SonyEricsson).

I hope it's not that low, WP7 is a nice platform and I really enjoy using it. It deserves more users :(

BS. I have more sales of my Windows Phone 7 app than that!*
*Ok, so maybe I only have 50-some sales of my app, but it's a specialized app for a small population, most of whom have iPhones and wouldn't pick up a WP7 -ever.

Don't worry, it's a "long haul" platform. Give it time. Lots of time. They'll eventually get it right.

Just buy off more developers:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...s_to_windows_phone_with_ios_porting_tool.html

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...se-to-build-windows-phone-7-applications.aspx

Delay the "real" phones until next year:

http://www.nokiaphones.net/first-nokia-wp7-models-to-appear-in-2012/

(And possibly extend the delay - it's MS, after all, not just Nokia)

And THEN . . . consumers will finally get what Apple and Google have already chewed up and spat out two years ago.

Winner.

I wish I liked it more, but I don't.

On these phones, the UI is the make-or-break for most consumers, and the tiles used by Microsoft just don't make any sense to me. Why are these better than icons on iPhones (which I'm also not a big fan of)?? Unless the UI is "clearly" better than an iPhone's, most people will just opt for an iPhone.

I "get" Android. Widgets make sense, and buttons you can press to just turn on WiFi, Bluetooth, search Google through a widget, etc, makes sense to me, particularly on some of the beautiful 4" and 4.3" screens on some of the Android phones!

WM7? I would probably like/hate it as much as my iPhone, so between these 2 options, I'd get the iPhone just because it's easier to sync with my MBP.

I'd like an Android phone, though. :)

http://www.neowin.net/news/analyst-pegs-wp7-sales-at-674000-units#comments

Russian tech analyst Eldar Murtazin (via Phone Arena) has proclaimed that Microsoft only sold 674,000 units despite shipping nearly twice as many devices. The information, while not confirmed by Microsoft, is the first educated guess to have any creditability behind it. Upon releasing this information, Eldar posted a curious bit of information on his Twitter account that makes this figure appear more like a leak than an actual estimation.

‘Samsung also shipped nearly 3.5 million bada operating system-based smart phones, outperforming total shipments of Windows Phone devices by more than a million units.’

Samsung managed to ship more Bada powered phones than WP7 devices in q1?

I assume the advantage Bada powered phones would be a different target demographic to the WP7 high-end devices. We need to see some midrange WP7 phones.

Live tiles. They can display actual information rather than a set icon.

problem is the mid range is being killed off.
You either have high end or low end.
High end people understand 200 bucks over 2 years is really not that much per month compared to the contract price. free guys are cheap and will just take the cheap phone and being happy.

Where is the mid range group. You generally fall in one of the 2 camps.

Live tiles are great for "at a glance" info. Even Android widgets pale in comparison from what i've seen.

Yep. When I had my iPhone I always wondered why even the weather icon didnt display the current temperature.

Best Live Tile uses are coming with Mango though.

I have to agree with that from what I have seen. The live ties are very great at info at a glance and honestly I think it is really well done. There are other thing about the OS that keep me from getting the phone along with some other design things in it but that come from personal preference.
MS is right they designed that phone around people who want info at a glance. Something the iPhone and iOS truly sucks at doing.

For me the middle ground is Android.
