I work at a real estate place and part of what I do is keep the computers in top condition. We have three XP boxes and one Windows 98 box. What I want to know is what people recommend for basic Windows maintenance, such as unhaystacking the registry and all that.

Also, we're thinking of upgrading the 98 box to XP. Will XP run decently on a 533 MHz PIII?

Thanks.

Depends mostly on the amount of RAM. With 512Mb and most of the eye-candy turned off it should run fine (depending on the Apps - it'll never be a 3d rendering powerhouse!)

i had xp on a 500mhz p3 with only 192 megs of ram and it ran fine for any normal task.

Thanks, robbie. I asked a friend of mine who works at a computer lab at the university and he said the same thing. It's a computer that's mostly going to be doing basic office grunt-work--typing stuff up, printing, and Palm syncing.

We'd be sticking with 98 on that box (it WAS working just fine) except that the whole thing went down and we don't have the original install disks. It was bought before I was here and it was bought from a custom place that doesn't give out install disks.

it's funny how you can go under the MS requirements and have something work just fine. i have an old laptop i just got (free) that has a 100 MHz 486 on it with 20 MB of RAM. it's very sluggish, but functional. absolutely hilarious to look at.
