Windows Server 2003 - Bootcamp & Parallels Problems...

I'm running Windows Server 2003, Bootcamp 1.1.2, and Parallels 3120 on a new C2D MacBook:

1) When booted into Windows under Bootcamp I was able to install one of the Apple-supplied drivers for the AirPort card. It seems to be installed properly except that it fails to see any wireless networks. I have about 10 networks in rang with great signals and none show up. Does the Apple driver not work under Windows Server 2003? I'm using one of the drivers in the net5211 or net5416 folders. I don't remember which one, but it's the only one that would install so I figured it's the correct one.

2) I can get only 1024 x 768 screen resolution when booted into Windows through Bootcamp. I'm on a Macbook so I was hoping to get the native 1280 x 800. Is this not possible through Bootcamp?

3) I can't seem to get the trackpad "tap-to-click" to work within Windows in Boot Camp.

4) Parallels fails to boot the Bootcamp partition. When I try to run it from my OS X desktop the following happens... The partition HD icon disapears from the OS X desktop, the CD drive makes a little noise, the Parallels window comes up, flips around to the normal DOS-like boot screen, a parallels dialog then comes up stating, "You are trying to boot via virtual machine into the Boot Camp partition with operating system that is not supported by Parallels Desktop. Booting into this partition may result in data loss and partitions being corrupted. Click OK to stop the virtual machine." I then click OK and Parallels quits. That's it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

My guess is that it is Windows Server 2003. From what I understand about Boot Camp is that you must use XP SP2. I think Visat would be the exception due to the nature of the beast.

Parallels is probably looking for XP as well. Check the documentation on Parallels and I bet it won't list Server. Try switching to XP if you have a copy.

Ok, somehow I got the video drivers installed and now I'm getting the native 1280 x 800 resolution. The other problems still exist. I'd try Window XP if I had a copy. Don't have one

1) Parallels will support basically any OS. But not when booting from a physical partition.

2) Boot Camp does not support Windows Server. The drivers are only written for XP Home/Pro SP2.

Wireless works now. I just removed the Atheros AR5008 adapter in the Device Manager, rebooted, re-installed it, now it works great!

bit of a thread resurrection!

I am gonna get a new HDD for running bootcamp and parallels and vmware images, and have a copy of WS2003 to use.

Is there much in the way of problems using WS2003 rather than XP on bootcamp? Other than extracting the drivers rather than installing from a CD? And would parallels be able to load this BC drive into a virtual machine?

Any compatibility issues with drivers? Or software that is mean to be "XP only"?

can anyone claify whether or not you can installl Sever 2003 on boot camp? If not would I be better off either using parallels or installing xp then installing server? I want to try server because I am wokring on a network admin degree and would like to at least play around with windows sever

I've used bootcamp to install Server 2003 on a Mac Mini (1.83 Ghz), MacBook (Late 2006) and an iMac (early 2008) and didn't find the information available online to be greatly helpful, so hopefully this post will help somebody like me sometime in the future.

To set up Windows Windows Server 2003 R2 on a Jan 2008 Mac Pro:

Boot OS X and run Boot Camp Assistant as usual.
Install Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 as usual (comes as 2 discs, but only requires the second disk upon your first successful log in so this isn't a problem with bootcamp).
Eject the Windows installation CD in the windows explorer by right clicking the D: drive and selecting Eject.

Insert Leopard DVD (won't run in Server 2003 without the next tweak).
Copy Windows Drivers from OS X Leopard DVD
Install Orca MSI (http://www.technipages.com/download-orca-msi-editor.html)
Use Orca MSI to remove WinXP requirement condition
Run Boot Camp driver installer
Once this is done, everything should be installed except ethernet and SMBus.
Run Intel Chipset Installation Utility.exe (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-013541.htm)
If ethernet cards are still not installed, run Boot Camp\Drivers\Intel\IntelEthernetInstaller.exe

Now all devices as listed in the device manager should be happy.

Troubleshooting:

1. I tried installing Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition (non R2, non SP1 or SP2) on the Mac Pro and kept getting BSOD during the late Windows installation stages. As mention above, I did not have this problem with the iMac, Mac Mini or MacBook and I'm guessing it was the video card, though it could likely be a chipset/processor problem as 2003 was a long time ago. Installing the R2 version worked flawlessly and this is the way I would recommend to go. Students can get this free from dreamspark.com. I'd be very keen to hear from anybody who has managed to install the non R2 version on a 2008 Mac Pro.

2. With Windows 2003 Server (non R2, non SP1 or SP2) on a Mac, you can't install Windows Service Pack 1 without a registry edit because it thinks there is not enough space on the C: drive. This occurs because it doesn't quite understand where the boot drive is. Do the following registry edit:

1. Click Start - Run - Type “regedit” and press enter.
2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
3. In the right pane, Right-click and select New - String value
4. Name it as “BootDir” and set its value to “C:\”

Then presto, you should be able to install SP1.

I use Windows Server 2008 R2 which is basically the same as Windows 7. It runs perfectly on boot camp with only 1 driver issue being the bluetooth usb controller. There is a fix available for this online which I haven't tried as yet.
