The question is, will it be released in my lifetime (BTW, I'm 29)
eh......and microsoft is just going to disappear right? You guys realize that microsoft is making more money on vista now than when xp and 95 launched. I am sorry to burst your bubbles but microsoft won't be going anywhere.I think it's questionable whether there will ever be a new desktop operating system from Microsoft, at least as we have come to think of operating systems as being a singular product. It took five years for Vista to come out. In another five years, I think the operating system on an actual computer will be less important. Although we have been able to see this theoretically for quite some time, it is starting to become an actuality that more advanced operating systems are being used on cell phones and televisions (iPhone and Apple TV).
I don't think they are implying MS is going away in five years. However, this may be the last time MS releases a huge operating system, which does a lot more than just enabling programs interact with the hardware. Instead, the market seems to be moving in the direction of web based software and computing appliances, devices which are good at a few functions, but not everything. You can bet Microsoft will resist as much as it can, but unless it really drops the ball, it will still be a big player in such a business environment as well. Of course, the question is whether this will happen in five or ten years time.eh......and microsoft is just going to disappear right? Where is your data supporting that theory?
