Am I the only one who thinks that the Vista UI is not only incredibly ugly on a screen, but not very oriented toward being usable?

Their color choices seem downright bizarre, as if driven by a tastelss desire for crass flash rather than by any thought to usability.

Frankly it reminds me more of a cheap television commercial, with visual noise turned way up to capture attention, rather than as something designed to be a tool, or an environment in which to think and create and produce.

Perhaps you're jaded? I think it looks quite nice. Not up to OS X standards, obviously, but for a windows OS it does a great job.

Do you have the beta or something? Because using it is a whole lot different from looking at pictures of it.

No, to be fair, I have only seen numerous screenshots from the betas, but in those it really seems awful. Noise and flash. Reminds me of a Kiss concert on bad desinger drugs

I like that Microsoft has chosen to steer away from XP's PlaySkool-looking color scheme in favor of a more neutral black glass look with its Aero UI. I'm not sure exactly what sorts of new practical features will be brought to the table with Vista, however.

compared to XP - Improved slicker and cleaner
compared to OSX - It looks like a video game interface. This makes me laugh because it use to be said that windows looks like a busienss OS where as OSX looks like kiddy land. At least in my eyes things have changed.

That captures it for me. A video game interface. Well said.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say Vista's UI is ugly. A lot of vista's elements certainly feel more inviting and welcoming. However, some other parts of the operating system, not many, are brash and threatning. Think of it as the welcoming/brashness of whether brush metal fits in os x
