I was hoping someone could help me with this...My roommate(windows user) is currently picking up a local cafe's wifi connection in our apartment .. but across the apartment in my room i am not able to get a signal on my powerbook(which i heard the airport connection sucks). I was wondering is there anyway to pick up this signal and share it with my powerbook in windows or using a wireless router to share the connection... thanks in advance..

He would have to configure Internet Connection Sharing on his machine in order for this to have any chance of working. Then your machine could talk to HIS machine, which would in turn talk to the Internet/wireless router.

Don't buy an airport in hopes of extending it. It will only extend other AP connections. So unless the coffee shop has an AP, it won't work.

I've never actually tried that, so I can't really say whether it would work. If you did do that, the problem is that your router would have to be set up as a "dumb" router, since the IP addresses would be coming from the café's router... and I don't know if a wireless router could be set up as a relay in that manner.ieatflamingos said:

haha yes i realize that, its just living in ny is too expensive to begin with, i guess i am going to be spending alot of time at the wifi donkin doughnuts.
Isn't it possible to by a range extending antenna, rather than a new router to extend the cafe's connection? I'm no expert, but I see loads of range extending antennas being sold in Best Buy, CompUSA, etc... Your powerbook should work just fine with it, as I have an ibook that gets its connection from a DLink router.

it might not be possible cause they might not allow the router to give out an ip address. i dont think a wifi router will forward the signal its just made to brodcast and recieve from the pc that is sending there is people that live down the road from me they also got wifi in there house but i cant see it threw the wifi router but whenm my friend comes over with his laptop he can get on mine or the guys down the road. i dunno if it is at all possable but there might be some software out there that will allow u to recive the signal threw a router i would just opt to make a directional wifi antana there is alot of diagrams out there and they work very good to recieve a weak signal from one point. i done somthing like that in school its fun to do and will teach u about wifi
just to let people know, i came to a solution today finally after struggling with this for the past month. i decided to try using cat5 wire today to try an bridge a connection using the create a network connection wizard. it is working perfectly right now. i have the wire ran to my room and my roommates computer is picking up wifi for the both of us. no more fighting anymore and i will sleep allitle better

yes i heard about that...but with all this new wireless technology i really think that it is just making it easier to share internet connections more people and creating larger networks. i am almost certain that close to 4 different households are currently using the same internet connection/ on the same network as me and my roommate.(one of which is paying for it). its like the purple elephant you can't help looking at.

my brother had someone use his wifi without him knowing... he came back from holidays and his bandwith is now on narrowband because that other guy (he has no Idea who in the building) used up his quota... thats not a good thing now he needs to buy more GB just to be able to surf normally... that's stealing... normal usage by an external computer wouldn't be that bad if they don't use all of your quota leaving you with 2 options... buy more quota or as my brother did now... cut everybody else out of his router...
