Windows XP Installing on narf2006's iMac!

OK - I am a relatively new switcher, but why would you want to put XP on Mac hardware? I would assume one would be looking for a dual boot environment? Since Windows is optimized for PC hardware, wouldnt there be a performance hit?

Just wondering...

If what you mean by PC hardware is (pretty much) anything with an Intel x86 CPU, then the Intel Macs are PC hardware, and pretty decent PC hardware at that.

Furthermore, Windows isn't optimized to run on anything, its biggest strength and a huge weakness is the huge amount of hardware that is actually supported by the OS. The only thing missing is the BIOS compatibility layer which is required to make the up to date PC hardware behave like a 1981 vintage PC so the stupid Windows OS can boot. Hence the contest.

I'd just like to have something to run Windows for when I actually need it. I know tons of people that would get a Mac if it could run Windows in addition to OS X.

For people who need it, running XP or Vista would be a godsend. I know it's necessary for some people. It's a necessary evil. I wish the world would have standardized on a Unix.

Ive recall reading of someone getting this far before but it craps out soon after. Dont get excited.

Also, if you were able to complete the install and get it running why the HELL would you take such a terrible picture?

I need more proof then just a few photos. A video showing the system boot up and start the installation will be more convincing. The guy could be using QEMU for all we know.

i have a question...(whenever windows will run on the Mac)

so, you're using windows and you happen to catch some virus...now, will those virus affect you when you switch back to OSX?

Here's my question: Is it really so hard to learn how to focus your camera? I mean, if you can really get XP running on an iMac, you're not that technically inept. :confused:

What narf has posted is believed to be legit, he has secretly shown his ideas to the WinXPonMac contest person, and he has verified that he's on his way. A big issue was VGA on the Intel Macs. From what I've heard, he developed some sort of CSM for the EFI to boot Windows. So it's not photoshopped, at least he's given no prior indication to support that.

Have to agree.

I managed to get XP working on my intel mac with Q unstable universal beta. Had to do the install on my powermac G5 & then drag the image over to my imac. It's very slow and crappy. I wouldnt even use it to check websites and design work on it....

There are legitamate reasons apple peeps why being able to run windows would be handy for some. We have all but given up using PC's here in the studio but there are a couple of application that dont have alternatives on mac that we need. We just want to be pc hardware free, and the ability to be able to boot up from an external drive seems handy for us.

Until it's possible I have to keep an ugly loooking heap of junk in the studio. Noisy thing that it is :)

No, I think you're wrong there, it's definitely real. The way the blueness of the screen reflects off the keyboard is perfect, no photoshopper could get that effect just right. The envelope under the corner is obviously fake, but it's so fake it's to distract you from the obvious overall non-fakeness.

It must be real. I'll take two. :p

Some folks from IBM Almaden are also claiming to have worked out a BIOS compatibility solution (a bootloader using the Bochs BIOS code as a shim). They aren't showing pictures or code at the moment, but at least real, identifiable people are involved.
