Windows XP Professional (bootcamp) Question!

Hello,

I was just reading over the bootcamp requirment page and it says "Windows XP Professional or Home with Service Pack 2" I have an older version of windows xp professional (does not include service pack 2) I have a cd with service pack 2 on it tho. I wanted to know if this install would be a problem?

You'll have to slipstream sp2 into the OS.

Search google for "slipstream windows sp2" and you find all the info you need.

How to slipstream SP2 without a PC

Should there be a sticky - "How to slipstream SP2 without a PC"?

1. Download Parallels Workstation and install.
2. Create a VM (virtual machine) and install your version of Win XP. Ignore the stuff about activation. You have 30 days grace period to activate, but won't be using this VM after 30 days ... isn't that true?
3. Download nlite from http://www.nliteos.com.
4. Copy the contents of the XP install disk to e.g the desktop of your VM.
5. Download the SP2 installer from Microsoft.
6. Fire up nlite and select the options to slipstream a service pack, and also select "create a bootable ISO".
7. Follow the steps to select the location of your original XP location and the SP2 installer location. Note where the ISO is created.
8. Set up sharing on your Mac account. Map as a drive on your XP VM. Move the ISO to your Mac drive.
9. Double check that the ISO is good by using it to install another VM. This means you don't have to burn more than one disk if you've screwed up somehow ... but that shouldn't happen.
10. Burn the ISO to disk using Disk Utility.
11. Shut down and delete the Windows VMs you created earlier. You are not allowed to run two instances of XP with the same license.
12. Install Boot Camp and XP SP2.

Has anyone tried Darwine instead? It's been on my todo list, but I never seem to get around to it. There are other ways to create the ISO on a mac using dd and mkisofs.

You could always make it a Guide....

I installed SP2 on my XP Pro version and burned it to a disk. It loads up on my windows machine to install XP SP2 but when I try loading this up via bootcamp it says "No installer CD was found"

You don't need to use Boot Camp once you have a bootable XP SP2 disc. Note that a disc can autorun within Windows, but still not be bootable. You can try booting from it in your Windows box.

Try and boot your Mac with the XP disc in the drive and press Option during the boot, select the CD that comes up and the installer should start from there...

Shows Macintosh HD does not show whats in cd drive. I can boot from my windows box off this cd fine, but it's not picking it up in the cd drive when I restarted and held option. The cd name is 060419_1755 <- not the standard windows xp name. Any other ideas?

Rename the CD and try again?

Also try booting your mac with the original XP disc holding down option. If it doesn't work, you've got other issues besides the disc.

Actually, I think bootcamp will install previous versions of XP (ie not SP2). You can download the SP2 installer from MS and burn that onto a regular cd and once you have installed XP (pre-SP2) pop in the cd and upgrade from cd. If you do this, though, you will probably have driver issues until you install SP2.

Just an alternative thought to all of this slipstreaming (which in fact I ended up doing for my MBP.. worked like a charm [used nlite] ).
