The Redmond, Wash.-based company on Thursday released to manufacturers an update that would add Bluetooth support to Windows XP. Bluetooth allows peripherals, handhelds and cell phones to connect to PCs without wires. The technology is complimentary to 802.11b wireless, or "Wi-Fi," which is used to network computers together or connect them to the Internet over the air.

On the whole, this is probably a good thing. With both Mac and Windows using Bluetooth, we should get some workable products.

I wish that wintel would drop USB2 and go with Firewire. As it is, the market will be carved up... and of course there's Serial ATA, too, and now Serial ATA-II.

I wouldn't mind if the internal drives used firewire. We could slide drives into a docking bay, so cables wouldn't be needed. The same bay could be used for opticals and hard drives, even for tape or PCMCIA docks. Maybe the iPod could even slide in.
