I have Winterboard installed with just one active theme, the iOS 6 icons for iOS 7. Let me get this straight: disabling that is not an option

But I've noticed, using top, that backboardd is using 5% to 7% CPU always while Springboard uses around 3%. Looks suspicious. Is that supposed to happen? I checked with some grep command someone posted, and Winterboard is affecting backboardd.

Now, I don't see any reason why Winterboard should constantly use my CPU just to... do nothing. Seriously, it does nothing except when I apply the theme, right? Well some people on random, less reliable sites have complained that it does use the CPU. Does anyone have more updated information about this?

The more Winterboard does the more battery it uses. And the theme doesn't replace anything, it runs over it.

So you're saying that Winterboard continuously renders the iOS 6 icons on top of my iOS 7 icons instead of just replacing the files? If so, that's really stupid, and I'm trashing Winterboard and replacing all the files myself.

What we did back in the day on my cousin's iPod touch running iOS 2 was we went in with OpenSSH, opened the .app of the application we wanted to edit, found its icon inside (a PNG), and replaced it with our custom one. It should still work, but iDisk is better than using OpenSSH.

It's tedious though. If there's a script that can do it for me, that would be great. Apple is going to give me a replacement iPhone once I have the time to take it in since it was manufactured with dust under the camera lens. So I'm not willing to do all that work yet.

That isn't how winter board works afaik. I read some technical explanation about it back then but I don't think I'm knowledged enough to make an explanation

Wow, it's hard to Google this because I keep getting articles about how to use Winterboard, probably the easiest jailbreak app to use ever -_- All I can find is this: http://www.iphonehint.com/2010/11/03/how-does-winterboard-work/

It says that it redirects the system to use different directories for its icons and stuff. I don't know if that means symbolic links or some hacky CPU-hogging way. I'm suspicious that it's draining my battery.

P.S. Beware of runaway top processes. For some reason, I found 2 of them using 100% CPU after I used top once!

i remember it was from reddit and explained by saurik himself. i can't remember which thread it was but it might have been this one: http://www.reddit.com/r/iOSthemes/comments/1kth1i/behind_the_art_of_ios_theming_with_sk37ch/

winterboard does use some more battery than normal depending on what you're trying to theme and how the code is being implemented by the developer

Thanks for the link. From what Saurik says, it looks like Winterboard is overkill for what I'm doing, plus it leaves room for the theme-maker to make an error and cause extra battery usage. I think I'm going to spend a little time later on manually putting the icons in. It's a much simpler task than what Winterboard is meant to do, apply system-wide themes that affect almost everything.

My usage of winterboard is same as yours. Getting iOS 6 icons on iOS 7. If you are able to manually do something (after removing winterboard) and still get the iOS 6 icons, i would appreciate you let us know how you did (safely).
TIA
