I had a problem in that there was no
Space on the disk and the boot up was going round in circles. There wasn’t enough space to reinstall another ios so I wiped the drive. I have however seemed to removed the startup drive so when I go to reinstall it can’t find an installation drive. I can link to the internet but can’t go any further. Any help would be appreciated!

You may want to try an internet recovery (command-option-r) but it will reinstall the original MacOS that came with your iMac... not the most recent.

1. Boot to internet recovery:
"command-OPTION-R" at bootup

2. You may need to enter a wifi password (if you're connected that way)

3. Give internet recovery time to download all the Mac OS utilities (may take a little while)

4. Open the OS installer and "aim it" at the empty drive.

See if that works. If you're already trying to do this, tell us EXACTLY at which point the operation "goes wrong" on you.
