Wiping/Install OS on 2 MBP to complement I own 27" Retina iMac

Just purchased the 27" Retina iMac with Yosemite


I have 2 MBP's I am about to wipe clean, one I am adding a SSD drive to and both being set up new again but I know I can't set up Yosemite on either one.


1) Late 2009 MBP presently on 1.0.9.5. Have original Snow Leopard Disc for it but wish to put on a later OS but one that is free as i don't wish to put any money into this MBP. My present DVD drive in it is toast but I do have a USB mac trackpad, albeit not yet opened I could use with it.

I'd prefer IF possible, to have an OS i can download and put on a USB key but i am not sure which OS I should put on it using this method that i won't have to buy.

You guys all know far more than I. What OS can I use for it using what I have explained above please???






2) is a late fall 2011 MBP. I have read numerous problems for people with this particular MBP that have upgraded to Yosemite so I am still on 1.0.9.5 as well.

Same question, is there an OS that I can download and place on a USB stick I not need to pay for other than Yosemite that I can place on this MBP?

(I haven't yet decided if I should do it before or after that SSD installation?)

Just realized I can get Maverick and am downloading it to put it on a USB to make it rebottle.

The problem with that is that it doesn't make my MBP's as compatible with the YOSEMITE running on the 27" retina iMac.

Have heard problems with late fall 2011 MBPs as I have anyone know if Yosemite is still problematic on this particular MBP?

I'd prefer to install it IF i could but I read some time ago that some MacBooks were just bogging right down the moment they upgraded to Yosemite.

Anyone happen to know if that has changed?

I have a mid 2009 MBP running Yosemite and I haven't noticed any problems.

If I were you I'd just install Yosemite on both of your computers and see how the run. You can always install Mavericks later if you want.

They are both in dire need of a fresh install and neither needs the amount of software on them then both have so I wish to do a clean install and leave the basics on plus just a couple apps that I use on them.
There is no need for either to be bogged down as they are with too much software i will no longer need on either of them, hence, another reason for the fresh install.

Curious, how much ram do you have on yours? And does yours use a SSD drive or the apple one it came with?


I should also say that I have a late fall 2011 MBP and I have read tons and tons of people commenting that as soon as they put Yosemite on that MBP the laptop became rather useless to deal with

My MacBook came with 4GB of ram but I upgraded to 8GB a few years ago. I am using the stock HDD (5400 RPM, 500 GB) that the computer came with.

I would recommend doing a clean install if you are going to upgrade.

I can't speak to the issues the 2011 models may have as I haven't looked into that.

I would recommend doing a clean install if you are going to upgrade.

Thanks. I think that the 8 gigs Ram would make the difference and this particular 2009 Macbook is not in good shape so not worth putting the money into.
So just upgrading it to Maverick, in order that my husband can just use it for email for a few days, while I get an SSD drive I bought to have installed in the fall 2011 MBP -----and then a few days later once the fall 2011 version is set up, I will toss the 2009 version.

Sorry, I was a smoker back then. No longer but the smoke did some damage. The DVD drive no longer works, and the battery is on its last legs so its not worth putting any money into. Plus I have a MBP and a 27" retina iMac and can only use one at a time BUT i was really curious to know how yours did work and had I not smoked back then, this MBP would have been worth upgrading today.

After all of that, I tried to wipe my 2009 MBP clean so I could install Mavericks but it was too much for the poor dear to deal with and the hard drive is no longer very healthy....

I can still use it. But there are errors on the drive so for now for the next week I am using it to do a certain set of emails on that i don't want on my main iMacs emails while I reformat and reinstall an OS onto the 2011 MBP but it really did kill the 2009 one


I noticed big files, movies, etc, I had a hard time transferring to other external drives as some could not be done due to an error here or there so, its pretty well toast that one ===sad to see it die
