Will Wireless Charging come to the iPad?

How much extra are you willing to pay for wireless charging on an iPad?

There is already a form of wireless charging in the form of the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro.

One of the ways you can use the keyboard is as a perpetual docking station on your desk so you can dock it and wirelessly charge. And when you need to go, just grab your iPad and go.

It’s one of the five major use cases of the product for me when I was considering the magic keyboard.

I don’t think it’s entirely outside the realm of possibility, and realistically, they could get it to 10w, which while much slower than we’ve become accustomed to recently with faster chargers, is the same as what Apple includes in the box for many models of iPad charger today. That said, given the size of most wireless chargers, getting an iPad centered and balanced on them would be a challenge. I think we’ll see a wireless charging iPad when/if Apple delivers a charging pad that addresses these issues.

It doesn't mean nothing. All of these other iPad related things are getting leaked, but no mention of wireless charging in any of them.

And that may change anytime. There is no guarantee in anything rumour related - as they are rumours, not leaks. Just because some stuff has been guessed correctly should not stop you from applying critical thinking. The non existence of a rumor doesn’t indicate the products isn’t in the works.

Its not really a non physical connection charging. The contacts are in fact interfacing wires. However, you are providing the part of the iPad Pro that an additional item should be able to connect and become the interface for real QI charging. Perhaps someone will make a sleeve or shell that does just that - connect to the iPad contacts and then the shell itself will be the interface for wireless.

This is something I miss having on tablets these days. One of the best parts of being a webOS user was to place your touchpad on its wireless charger when returning home. The reaction wireless charging had from people back then was this crazy look of wonder and magic.

That was what I absolutely LOVED on the old iPadPro’s: Having the pogo pins on one of the sides instead of on the back allowed it to use the Logitech Base station. While not Qi charging, it offers a similar convenience. One of the things I’ll probably miss most when upgrading to a newer iPad.

I fully agree. I see no reason something like that couldn't be done for the iPad using its contacts that are there already. It would have to be somewhat of a jig or fitting to make sure the contacts touch.

A while back, my phone port for charging wouldn't hold the cable (it would fall out). I paid to have it replaced and that was when I learned about QI charging. Though the repair went well, I have never plugged in for charging again. I have two QI chargers - one for home daily and one for travel in my laptop case. Very little impresses me but something this practical in my estimates - was awesome.

Back in the palm webOS days I had a touchstone charger (their proprietary wireless charging puck) mounted in both my cars, on the table at the side of my sofa and next to my bed. My phone never lived in my pocket unless out for a walk, it was always sat on its charging dock. The display mode switched to show the time, upcoming appointments and the weather/tide times. My touchpad tablet lived on its dock on the fireplace in the living room when not in use and showed a selection of holiday photos, like a digital photo frame.
All of this without ever connecting a wire of any form, most times i forgot that was even possible.

It’s a little janky but you can get a wireless charging sticker that sticks on the back and plugs into the lightning port for $15. I’m thinking of getting one but it would only make sense if you plan to use the wireless charger most of the time and don’t need fast charging.

I think they should build it in to all their products, Macbooks too. How cool would it be to just get home and set my computer on my desk and have it charge? Bonus points if it could smoothly and wirelessly drive my 4K monitor so I never have to plug anything in.

It’s already a bit fiddly to place an iPhone properly on a Qi loader. Doing the same with a much bigger iPad would be a little challenge every time.

As long as Apple’s products are designed to use the outer shell as heat sink and thus requiring it to be made from metal, that won’t happen.

Somehow I can't see Apple doing it with the lower end ipads when they are targeting certain markets (education for one) where the feature will go largely unused. We'd be talking about an added cost item that every user in those kinds of segments would have to pay for but do not need.

Would be cool in the pro lineup though. More incentive to build charging into my nightstand lol.
