For those that have the 8/X, I have a question about the wireless charging. Today, I have my iPhone 7 plus in a thin, clear TPU case, and inside the case (between the case and the phone), I have a metal plate adhered to the case wall, so that when I'm in the car, I can use a magnetic phone holder (similar to this). Effectively, the case is what is held to the mount, and the case hold the phone.

If I was to upgrade to an 8/X, and wanted to use wireless charging, would having this plate between the charger and the phone affect the ability to charge? Having this plate there is vital to my use of an iPhone, as I spend a lot of time in the car, and need to be able to place my phone on the mount and remove it quickly. But would also like to place the phone on a wireless charger when I'm home.

Anyone have any experience with this scenario that they could share?

I can verify this. I used to have this on my S8, and if the metal plate is in the middle it won't work. I managed to get it working by having the metal plate on the top of the case, but it didn't work well on the vent mount.

Actually it's fine. I have a magnetic phone mount for my car and had a rectangular metal plate between my 6s and case, it worked great. With my iPhone X, I have the Apple leather case and I placed the plate at the very bottom of the case. It still mounts fine and I've had no issues using my wireless charger. No heat/warming issue when charging either.

Hmm. Ok. Has anyone tried drilling a series of holes in the plate? Wondering if there holes for the charging to pass through, but the plate stays in tact for magnetic holding, would that work?

Can you put the plate at the very bottom? This might work as others have stated.

Try positioning the plate either low or high. If the coil in phone is in center it might work.

Drilling holes will not work. Electromagnetic radiation will not leak through holes. It envelopes the area.

If you look at the shattered X, the circle is where the wireless charging is. If you can fit yours below it, it may work.

I can confirm what others have said, I am using a round metal plate, about the size of a silver dollar, and mine charges just fine on 2 different wireless chargers. I have it positioned in the bottom third of the case. Some magnets on the car mounts are stronger than others but being 1 oz lighter than the 8 plus, the small plate works just fine.
The larger rectangular plate that I was using with my 7+ did not work on X with wireless charging.

I will try larger plate turned sideways. Will let you know.

I have 2 different mounts but this is the one I'm using now - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V54LQO4
I don't recall which mount the round plate I'm using came with...this one or the one I've had for quite a while.

This one ^^^ has a stronger magnet and a rubberized attachment surface so it doesn't slip/spin easily on its own. However, the base part didn't feel as stout as the one I had previously so I am using the CD slot piece from the old one with the magnet piece from the new one :)

Not sure. I don't have an 8/X yet, but was just wondering what the experience was like. Currently, the plate is probably in the middle to upper part, in my setup with the 7 plus. I could try, but with a plus phone, putting the plate at the bottom might result in the phone being top heavy on the magnetic holder, and falling off when hitting a good bump.

Appreciate the "put the plate at the bottom" suggestion. Any others?

Any suggestion in Wireless charging Car mount that you using and is working with a case? I bought an iOttie, it looks like is charging but the % is not increasing, however the phone say charged and the battery indicator is green.

thanks

Some chargers works with the metal plate, some not. With that being said, how to judge if a specific charger would work is still a myth until you try it with your phone and plate. So you risk buying any wireless charger with the metal plate in your phone case.

However, there are some MAGNETIC car vent/dash mounts with wireless chargers built in - just search 'magnetic wireless charger car mount'. You buy one of those chargers and they include a metal plate in the box which you'll need to put in your case in order to magnetically stick your phone to their charging pad and charge wirelessly in the car.

It's just my thought that if you use the metal plates provided in the wireless charger car mounts, then you'll have a better chance being able to use normal wireless charging pads at home as well since they already worked on a wireless charging pad, in the car. o_O
