Hi guys, im new, and i dont really know where to put this thread, but i need to do this for my apple TV so i thought here would be good.

I got an apple tv for my birthday and i own a macbook pro 13" and PS3. I want to hook them all up so i got an airport extreme and was wondering how i can make a home network without having internet. Like a server that isnt connected to the internet.

Is this even possible, how do i do it? I have tried googling it and its no hope.

Thanks alot for your time

Just connecting your computers to the Airport Extreme should do. Both Bonjour and DLNA will broadcast over the network without an Internet connection present. You can also use a regular wireless router, too.

To share media to the PS3, you will need some sort of DLNA client, such as Media Link. Also know that the PS3's wireless sucks. Streaming movies and even software updates are excruciatingly slow. Consider using an Ethernet connection to connect the PS3 with the rest of the network.

I want to stream content from my external drive to my appletv xbmc but i want to do it while my laptop is off

Would it be better to buy a wd mybook network drive $100

Or the apple airport extreme router with usb support $ 189 & just use my current normal external drive

???

im not sure how to connect though, can anyone link me to a walkthrough plz. Im not too good at these things.

Also i have a telstra turbo wirless internet sim card stick, will that plug into my router for internet?

Yes, that NAS (network-attached storage) box will work without your computer on. It supports DLNA which means you can use that box to stream movies to your PS3 (in the correct format, that is). I'm pretty sure the XBOX360 also streams DLNA format.

What I'm NOT certain about is if that box will work with your AppleTV. In fact, I'm pretty sure it will not. You might want to consider a WD TV Live box instead of the AppleTV. That way you can put .MKV files on the NAS directly and the WD TV will play it. The AppleTV requires that you transcode the videos into .M4V format, which is many times very problematic, especially getting subtitles working properly.

I can play mkv on my apple tv with xbmc ok
