My MBP died last thursday and I am now in need of a fast internet connection on my Mac Pro. Currently I have a wired connection running through some netgear device that transfers the signal through outlets in the house. Works like crap. Internet is slow as hell and randomly goes off entirely. Wireless should be an improvement.

I tried calling an apple store. I was told that all macs have built in wireless and that I shouldnt need a wireless card. After reiterating my point several times and asking to speak to someone else, he finally says that he understands my question and tells me that he doesnt think they carry wireless cards for Mac Pros but he can transfer me to Apple Care.

Apple care guy spends about 4 minutes looking through website unable to find what he's looking for, so he transfers me to an online store guy.

Online store guy tells me that there is nothing I can buy that I can put into my Mac Pro that will allow it wireless access, and tried to sell me some sort of external solution with a ridiculous nonsense pitch about how it is 2011 rather than 2009 so it will be better!

I try to insist that there is a wireless card that I can buy, but he says that it's something that comes built in when the computer is manufactured, and since I got a refurbished Mac Pro, the original user opted out of a wireless card and it cant be added at this point. I just hung up at that point.

So I'm turning to MacRumors. What do I do from here?

which year is your Mac Pro? The wireless card (airport) is in the 2010 model of Mac Pro, but not in the previous model. I have a 2009 Mac Pro and a 2010 Mac Pro, only the latter one has build-in wireless card.

Are they physically different or is it just that only one of them comes with the airport card installed by default? My Mac Pro 2009.

If you have a 2009 Mac Pro, most likely you don't have a build-in wireless card. You may buy a USB wireless adapter.

What the heck? Of course you can put in an airport extreme card, here's one for sale that will work just fine.

If you buy one Apple may not be willing to install it for you since you didn't buy it from them though.

My advice would be to go in person to a Mac store and talk to a Genius there who might know what the hell they're talking about. If they refuse to sell/install one check a 3rd party dealer, and if that doesn't work you may just have to buy one and install it yourself.

All Mac Pro's can accept Airport cards, they all have a slot for it. Its an optional install when you order the computer.

You could use an Airport Express to connect your Mac via an ethernet cable to your wireless network.
