We just got a new plasma and hooked up my dads laptop so we could watch movies on it. It sucks having to run up the laptop to do stuff, so we want a wirless keybaord and mouse. His computer doesnt have bluetooth. I think it would be better if there was something small we could buy,like a kb and mouse so it doesnt take up a lot of room. How far to normal wireless kb and mouse work? We need it to work up to about 10 feet away from the receiver.

Be really careful using a computer on a plasma display... Plasmas are susceptible to burn-in. While some are better than others, the fact that you have highly static elements in a screen display on a computer (like the Apple in the menu bar, which is always there) is the worst-case scenario in terms of generating burn.
As far as your question, BT is rated for 10m (more than 30 feet). That's probably not realistic, but 10 feet should be no problem for BT devices.

If you aren't going to go Bluetooth I've read a little about IR extenders to extend the distance of wireless mice and keyboards. You might wish to research that a bit as I have no hands-on experience with such.

I second that. You can get a Quality DVD player for far less than a BT Keyboard/mouse.

since the computer doesn't have bluetooth built in, i would recommend the Logitech MX5000. You have to use the included USB Bluetooth adapter or the keyboard just won't work. I own one running on my mac mini and absolutely love the laser mouse/BT Keyboard. Check it out for 119 at newegg.com
i forgot to mention the laptop wasnt a mac, its a crappy dell.. We have a dvd player but use the laptop to play movies that i have on my computer..I bought a wireless kb and mouse last night and am returning it this mornign because it doesnt have the reach,... im going to buy something bluetooth today.

Try moving your wireless base station away from your iMac, more than a couple of meters way should do it.
(microwaves and mobile phones also cause problems.)
