Wireless N upgrade for 2006 Mini coreduo

Hello all,

I was having issues with my G card dropping offline when I upgraded to SL. So after multiple fixes recommended by Apple. To resolve the issue I did upgrade to an apple wireless N card and upgraded the antenna to help with this issue. But still when transferring any large files or viewing online videos the connection will drop. I am using a WNDR3700 router and it doesn’t drop any other wireless devices in my home. Just the mac mini drops when any kind of load is placed on the connection. The only fix to restore connectivity is to restart my Mac. Wired connection is very stable but I don’t like having Cat5 cables running through the hallways just to have a connection to my Mac.


Any help would be awsome.

Apple doesn't play well with a LOT of third party routers. This is more Apple's fault than anyone else's as the same problems do not manifest when running Windows or Linux on the same kit.

After trying a succession of different third party routers, all of which dropped the connection, some more frequently than others, I bit the bullet and got a (now very overpriced) Airport Extreme. No problems since. Someone more cynical than I am might suggest that this is no coincidence.

I had real problems with all my Apple stuff on 'consumer grade' wireless routers. At home I got a Time Capsule, which solved all the issues. At my parent's I put in a 2Wire router which is sold by the local telecoms company as it's business router. It's been 100% too.

The consumer grade Netgear, Buffalo etc routers were a bit crap.

It might be worth noting (as I performed the upgrade on my mini, 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB, 80GB) that the older Mac mini such as mine do not have the right number of antenna's inside to fully work at 'n' speeds. The way round this is to attach the built in antenna to one of the connections on the WiFi card and then add two additional antenna's to the other connectors on the WiFi card. This allows full 'MIMO' - and thus faster Airport transmission rates.

I would show a photo of the two antenna's sticking out the back of my Mac mini, but I am at work and its at home. I'll try to remember when I get back

Well I purchased an APE connected wirelessly and the same thing happened took the APE back got a Linksys E4200 and again the samething happened.
