Wireless network keeps dropping

Hi,

I am very new to Macs so need some basic help. Recently, my wireless network keeps dropping on my Mac Mini with built in Airport.

I have a wireless router (Vigor 2600G) and this serves out IP addresses to the following;

PC (wireless static)
Mac (wireless DHCP)
XBOX (wired static)
XBOX360 (wired static)

I connect the Mac to my wireless network, and within a matter of minutes it has diconnected and when I check the list of available networks in the list, it shows 2 other wireless networks on my street but not mine, so I have to choose other and renter the details including the WEP key every time!

Can anyone point me in the right direction, I don't really know enough about Macs to know what I should be looking for.

What's your range like? Are you far from the router? Maybe look at removing com.apple.airport.preferences.plist from the folder you find it in, which will lose some of your settings but that shouldn't matter considering you have to re-enter them all the time anyway.

FWIW, if this does nothing, putting said file back where you found it (and replacing the new one) should get all your current settings back.

Range is good - it's just downstairs. The PC next to the Mac has no issues with the wireless signal. Also when I look at Airport properties when it is connected, the signal strength is like 2 bars down from max.

Not sure what the settings file is. Is there any such like as an event log on a Mac like there is on a PC, so I can see why it's dropping out?

I doubt the Console Log will record AirPort dropouts.

As for the preference file, that's the file that stores some of the AirPort settings. Every now and then, these settings can become corrupt causing problems similar to yours (among other consequences). Deleting this file when AirPort is off should mean that the next time you start AirPort up, a default version of this file (the original) will be recreated, hopefully getting rid of any corrupt sections.
