looking for a good program like Netstumbler or Kismat (Kismac for macs) that will work on the macbook air. I want to locate wireless networks.

cracking the passes would be great too if there is one out there that would do both. Really do want the wireless network detecting so I don't have to keep hitting "show networks" looking for a wireless network.

iStumbler.

I think you cant put the builtin wireless interface in promiscuous mode so if you want to do any "cracking" you will need a pcmcia card.

Try KisMAC. If you want to do anything useful with network scanning and penetration testing, buy a USB WiFi dongle that doesn't use an unsupported chipset.

so if I wanted to not only detect networks, but also crack them... are their any all-in-one tools like kismac that will work with the internal wireless card?

if so, what are they?

if not, what external card (link please) should I purchase if I want to get into that.

Thanks

Would this lack of compatiblity also apply to capturing packets in Ethereal?

I use tcpdump from the command line all the time. Just do:
sudo tcpdump -i en0 -vv (-w filename if you want save it file)

As far as cracking wep keys, why?
